EPA Issues ‘Strongest-Ever’ Auto Emissions Standards to Boost EVs

The new regulations exemplify the Biden administration’s intense green mission, as climate change has been a major concern for the White House.

On March 20, the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) released new regulations for automobiles that aim to lower greenhouse gas emissions and promote both hybrid and electric vehicles ( EVs ).

The Biden administration’s plan to speed up the production and adoption of electric vehicles is reflected in the new laws, which number to the strictest-ever tailpipe emissions.

This affects customer vehicles, mild- duty trucks, and moderate- responsibility vehicles produced, starting in 2027.

The regulations, according to the EPA, would save 7.2 billion tons of carbon emissions through 2055 in addition to providing “nearly$ 100 billion of annual net benefits to society, including$ 13 billion of annual public health benefits due to improved air quality, and$ 62 billion in reduced annual fuel costs, and maintenance and repair costs for drivers”.

The EPA stated that the business could meet the requirements under its final rule if at least 13 percent of new vehicle sales are electronic by 2032, along with more fuel-efficient gasoline-powered vehicles that get more miles per gallon.

That would be a significant increase over the current EV sales, which increased from 5.8 % in 2022 to 7.6 % of new vehicle sales last year.

    Green Agenda

The new regulations best reflect the Biden administration’s intense green plan, which has been a major concern for the White House since President Joe Biden took office on January 20, 2021.

In a speech, EPA Administrator Michael Regan touted these new laws as firmly combatting waste.

These strongest-ever pollution standards for cars solidify America’s command in building a fresh transportation future and creating high-paying American jobs, according to Mr. Regan, who also supports President Biden’s traditional climate agenda.

” Under President Biden’s leadership, this Administration is pairing solid standards with traditional investments to revive local manufacturing, strengthen domestic supply chains and create great- paying jobs”, he added.

Ali Zaidi, a regional climate consultant for the White House, stated that American car manufacturing offers drivers options while also protecting the planet.

Our workers are creating vehicles and cars that give American vehicles a choice, giving them a way to get from point A to point B without having to fill up at a petrol station, he said in a statement.

” From connect- in variants to fuel cells to completely energy, individuals have more choices today”, continued Mr. Zaidi. Selling of these vehicles have quadrupled since 2021, and rates have remained low ever since.

The new regulations received applause from economic and auto-related organizations.

The EPA’s last greenhouse gas emissions law for light-duty cars has made significant progress, according to the union organization United Automobile Workers in a statement.

” The prospect is energy. Automakers are “investing massive amounts of money and building cutting-edge battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, standard hybrids, and fuel cell vehicles that drive efficiency and turn petroleum miles to electronic miles,” according to Alliance for Automotive Innovation President and CEO John Bozzella in a statement.

The EPA has made significant progress in bringing about a more practicable emissions rule that protects workers who build ICE vehicles while laying a foundation for automakers to implement the full range of automotive technologies to reduce emissions, he continued.

    Prohibitively expensive

However, not everyone celebrated the latest developments to deal with pollution.

The Biden administration has finalized a regulation that will definitively remove the majority of new gas cars and traditional hybrids from the U.S. market in less than a decade, according to American Fuel &amp, Petrochemical Manufacturers President and CEO Chet Thompson and American Petroleum Institute President and CEO Mike Sommers.

” As much as the President and EPA claim to have’ eased’ their approach, nothing could be further from the truth”, they continued.

” This regulation will make most Americans unaffordable or prohibitively expensive new gas-powered vehicles.” This wildly unpopular policy will have the impression and function like a ban for them.

They stated that they are prepared to contest the new rules in court.
