The Lancaster City Council recently passed a law requiring cooperation with ICE, and the 2- 1 voting was in response to it.
LANCASTER, Pa. — The Lancaster County Commissioners passed a quality Wednesday declaring the region as a “non- sanctuary” state regarding improper immigration.
The Lancaster City Council passed the” Trust Act” last month, which prohibits city employees from requesting information about a patient’s immigration status without a permit or from assisting in emigration protection.
In order to deal with federal law enforcement, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) officials, the resolution urges municipalities in the county to” cooperate with federal law enforcement regarding persons found in Lancaster County and the United States illegally.”
The quality is said to be intended to promote cooperation with law enforcement, according to commission who supported it.
” The information we want to take is we’re going to pursue the law”, said Commissioner Ray D’Agostino, who supported the solution. ” We will collaborate with federal law enforcement officers, from Immigration Services, with respect to people who are here illegally”.
Critics of the quality claim that it would actually deter refugees from working with law enforcement for major crimes.
According to Daniel Alvalle, president of the Pennsylvania-based immigrants rights organization CASA,” the directors claim that they’re doing this in the name of common safety.” These proposals “are going to actually accomplish the exact same.” Individuals will be hesitant to report crimes because they fear being asked about their immigration status.
The 2- 1 voting saw D’Agostino and Commissioner Josh Parsons vote in favor of the quality, with Commissioner Alice Yoder election against.
