A group of 19 Democrat lawmakers have written to President Joe Biden in support of laying the groundwork for the establishment of a two-state alternative to the Israeli-Palestine issue.
The initiative was led by Sen. Tom Carper ( D- Del. ). In the email, the senators called for establishing a “bold, people model” to create a non- military Arab state “in post- war Gaza, based on a political solution in the conflict, a statement from the senator’s office said.
We ask you to formally establish a way for the United States to identify a non-military Arab state, the lawmakers wrote.
The senators cited the ongoing humanitarian crises that has been unfolding in Gaza, which has resulted in malnutrition and hunger of citizens as a result of the battle.” This minute requires determined U.S. command that must move beyond facilitation,” the senators wrote.
We therefore request that the Biden Administration immediately create a strong, common framework outlining the steps required for the United States to recognize a non-militarized Palestinian state that includes the West Bank and Gaza and be led by a revitalized and reform-oriented Palestinian Authority, the letter continued.
Democratic lawmakers from more than a few states, including Sens. Tammy Baldwin ( Wis. ), Sherrod Brown ( Ohio ), Chris Coons ( Del. ), Dick Durbin ( Ill. ), Martin Heinrich ( N. M. ), Mazie Hirono ( Hawaii ), Amy Klobuchar ( Minn. ), Ed Markey ( Mass. ), Jeff Merkley ( Ore. ), Chris Murphy ( Conn. ), Brian Schatz ( Hawaii ), Jeanne Shaheen ( N. H. ), Tina Smith ( Minn. ), Chris Van Hollen ( Md. ), Raphael Warnock ( Ga. ), Elizabeth Warren ( Mass. ), Peter Welch (Vt. ), and Sheldon Whitehouse ( R. I. ).
The senators also called for a reform to the current Arab specialist, set out by a foundation for peace, that incorporates many facets, including judiciary, education, and security systems, in addition to tackling corruption and incitement to violence in Israeli territories.
The senators made their pleas shortly after Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Senate, (D-N. Y. ) reaffirmed his unwavering support for a two- state solution, specifically denouncing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership, whom he referred to as an” obstacle to peace.”
Mr. Netanyahu faced criticism for standing firm in his opposition to a two-state solution.
Mr. Schumer, the highest- ranking Jewish elected official in American history, also urged citizens of Israel to hold new elections.
The senators added that any upcoming Palestinian Authority must be in coherence with the state of Israel, be willing to support the two-state resolution by force, and effectively abstain from any terrorist activity in the area, which includes Hamas.
The senators also demanded that the Biden administration put pressure on the Israeli government to stop home demolitions and evictions of Palestinians in the West Bank and to avert further violence against Palestinians by Jewish settlers.
The senators wrote that by providing a roadmap for U.S. recognition of a Palestinian state, the United States can finally lead the way to a two-state solution and rekindle discussions for a comprehensive regional peace plan.
The senators also demanded that Palestinians ‘ work permits be reactivated and that Israeli settlement planning and construction in the West Bank be stopped.
