President was described by special counsel Robert Hur as a “well-intentioned, old man with a bad memory.”
On March 21, President Joe Biden’s attorney general defended himself against critics who were upset when he released a special guidance statement on the government’s handling of classified records without making any changes or changes.
In the 388- page report, which was released by the U. S. Department of Justice ( DOJ), Mr. Hur also said that the decision not to prosecute stemmed in part from the idea that “at trial, Mr. Biden would assuredly present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a compassionate, well- meaning, old man with a bad memory”.
Attorney General Merrick Garland may have intervened, according to a reporter’s question on Thursday when they had questioned whether President Biden’s information should have been changed.
Mr. Garland responded to Mr. Garland during an unrelated hit event,” Nobody from the White House has said that to me.”
We object to the numerous, distorting claims made about President Biden’s recollection, which go against established Court rules and procedures. The President’s lack of storage for a particular notion or series of events is obvious and appropriate for the Special Counsel. However, Mr. Siskel wrote at the time that his statement goes even further, including allegations that the President has a general lack of memory, an assertion that has no legal function.
Mr. Siskel suggested editing the document to make it “economical”, writing,” It should include the factual information important to the charging choice, but facts or events that are not essential to the determination have no area”.
Mr. Garland noted that since the special counsel regulation came into effect about 25 years ago, he had previously pledged to make all special counsel reports public.
The idea that an attorney general would edit, redact, or censor the special counsel’s explanation of why the special counsel made the decision, according to Mr. Garland, is absurd.
When U.S. attorneys investigating or prosecuting a person would present a conflict of interest, according to the regulations, appointing a special counsel would be in the public interest. Mr. Garland appointed Mr. Hur in 2023, after a preliminary probe showed classified documents were found at President Biden’s former office in Washington and home in Wilmington, Delaware.
Once an investigation is over, a special counsel is required to provide conclusions to the attorney general, and the attorney general “may decide that public release of these reports would be in the public interest, to the extent that release would comply with applicable legal restrictions.”
Biden Upset
Following the release of the report, President Biden was clearly upset.
” I’m well- meaning, and I’m an elderly man, and I know what the hell I’m doing. After its release, he declared,” I’ve been president and I’ve helped this country get back on track.”
Other Democrats have criticized Mr. Hur’s report. ” Despite clearing President Biden from being prosecuted, you use your report to trash and smear President Biden”, Rep. Hank Johnson ( R- Ga. ) said during a hearing with Mr. Hur.
In defending his description of President Biden at the February hearing, Mr. Hur argued that when assessing whether the president had willfully kept or disclosed national defense information, he had to take into account the president’s memory, overall mental state, and how a jury might view his memory and mental state in a criminal trial.
Additionally, President Biden claimed that Mr. Hur incorrectly claimed that he could not recall the death of his son Beau.
” I do n’t need anyone, anyone, to remind me when he passed away”, President Biden said. ” How the hell dare he raise that”.
President Biden claimed at the same time that the Egyptian president is actually the Mexican president, the latest in a line of incorrect assertions.
When President Biden nominated Mr. Garland, he said that he wanted the DOJ to be independent.
” You wo n’t work for me. You are not the president or the vice president’s lawyer. I do n’t value your loyalty. It’s to the law, the Constitution, the people of this nation, to guarantee justice”, he said at the time, “he said at the time.
Me. Garland defended his handling of Mr. Hur’s report on Thursday by making the remarks.
” I sincerely believe that that’s what he intended then, and I sincerely believe that that’s what he intends now,” Mr. Garland said.
