‘ I would love to have him arrive on and address a joint session of Congress,’ Mr. Johnson said. ‘ We will surely lengthen that invitation.’
House Speaker Mike Johnson ( R- La. ) Netanyahu will be invited to handle Congress, he said on Thursday.
On Wednesday, stories initially started to surface that the Republican speech was thinking about inviting the Israeli leader to speak to Congress. Asked again about the plan during an exam on CNBC’s” Squawk Box” programme on Thursday night, Mr. Johnson said for an request is in the works.
” I would love to have him come on and address a joint session of Congress”, Mr. Johnson said. ” We will definitely stretch that offer”.
The Louisiana Republican added that they’re” simply trying to work out schedule” to handle such an offer.
Mr. Schumer’s criticism of Mr. Netanyahu and his demands for new Jewish elections has sparked a backlash. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky. ) stated right after Mr. Schumer’s floor speech that” the Jewish state of Israel deserves an ally that acts like one” and that it is “grotesque and hypocritical for Americans to call for the removal of the democratically elected leader of Israel.”
In an additional effort to condemn Mr. Schumer, Mr. Johnson did not specifically state that his attempts to welcome Mr. Netanyahu to speak to Congress were done in a CNBC interview.
” What Chuck Schumer did was about remarkable, only unbelievable”, Mr. Johnson said Thursday. It is simply clearly absurd to suggest to our most alliance in the Middle East that he knows better how to manage their politics.
Mr. Johnson told” Squawk Box” that Mr. Schumer’s remarks were “outrageous” and a “terrible message to our friends and our opponents around the world”, adding that he wished the Senate majority leader “would stay his remarks to himself”.
Netanyahu and Senate Democrats in a jiff over Schumer’s remark
Following Mr. Schumer’s opinions on the Senate floor next week, Mr. Netanyahu had sought out an opportunity to target U. S. lawmakers.
Sen. Schumer made it abundantly clear that he does not believe these conversations should take place in a political fashion. That’s certainly beneficial to Israel”, a spokesperson for Mr. Schumer’s business said Wednesday.
Mr. Schumer rebuffed Democratic criticism of his remarks about the Israeli vote at a distinct press conference on Wednesday, urging them to refrain from polarizing their disagreements with the Netanyahu government.
” I care seriously on Israel and its long- word potential”, said Mr. Schumer, who is the first Israeli Senate majority leader and the highest- ranking elected Israeli official in the U. S. government. ” When you make the issue political, you harm the cause of helping Israel.”
Without some degree of support from the Democratic-controlled Senate, it’s unclear whether Mr. Johnson will be able to organize a joint program for the Israeli prime minister to tackle Congress. With regard to Mr. Schumer supporting like a joint session of Congress, Mr. Johnson said” I guess we’ll find out”.
” I’m the one who invites me to speak in the House, and that’s fine as well,” said Mr. Johnson. However, I believe a sizable portion of that Senate would want to travel and support Netanyahu and Israel.
