A controversial plan to provide immigrant families living in the United States improperly with debit cards for meals and baby products is being pursued in New York City.
Under the new program, a family of four would receive up to$ 350 per week on a debit card. The course will last for six months. As the plan plans to reach about 115 people over the next week, ten families received bank cards on Monday.  ,
Mayor Eric Adams stated at a press conference this month that” we need to dispel the myth that we gave American Express accounts to everyone.” ” That is just not real”.
He has defended the system, arguing that it will lower the cost of providing for immigrants and encourage local businesses to return.  ,
The programme received condemnation for the possibility of misuse or fraud as well as questions about whether illegal refugees were receiving preferential treatment over another New Yorkers in need of support.  ,
” A lot of New Yorkers are going to get this as something that’s necessarily unjust”, Joseph Borelli, the City Council’s Democratic majority leader, said. There are many New York who are having trouble paying their bills.
Anne Williams-Isom, New York City’s deputy mayor for health and human service, said,” I do battle with why folks are being so hostile when it comes to providing something so fundamental for families with children.” ” It’s not putting groups against each other”.
American families who are staying in the state’s hotels as part of Adams ‘ 28-day stay card program will be given out at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. Before expanding the system, officials said the use of the cards may get monitored.  ,
” We’ll be looking at where they’re truly being used, what the cards is being used for, and comments from migrants themselves to see whether this is something that is worthwhile”, Williams- Isom said.
Additionally, the area has the authority to delete funds from debit cards or stop them from working.
