The American Senate has approved the Digital ID Bill 2023, with 33 members voting well and 26 opposing.
On March 27, several lawmakers took to social media to talk that the policy was rushed through the Parliament without discussion.
Following a review and assessment with the Senate Committee, Finance and Government Services Minister Katy Gallagher proposed changes to the original policy.
Within two years of receiving royal assent, personal companies will now be able to apply for a digital ID from the Australian government.
The legislation ( pdf ) establishes a national digital ID system and provides the framework for an online identity check for Australian citizens.
