3. Immigration
While legal arguments for a controversial Texas law that allows state officials to detain and arrest people they suspect of entering the country illegally will continue to be unconstitutional. A federal appeals court upheld the law’s designation as SB 4 in a 2 to 1 vote, citing the court’s decision to decide whether it violates the US Constitution. Immigration advocates are concerned about more racial profiling, detentions, and attempted deportations by state authorities in Texas, where Latinos make up 40 % of the population, because of the law. After the Supreme Court last week set it aside for a short time, the appeals court panel then put it back on hold hours later, SB 4 has been in limbo.
4. Disney
After the parties reached a settlement, Disney and Florida will likely end a protracted conflict. The conflict between the governor of Florida and the theme park Ron DeSantis began in March 2022 when Bob Chapek, the then-CEO of Disney, voiced opposition to a bill that would restrict certain LGBTQ topics in the classroom. The bill was referred to as a” challenge to fundamental human rights” by Chapek. DeSantis demanded that Florida’s legislature remove the long-standing special tax exemptions for Disney in Central Florida and design a new board of hand-choice supervisors to run the district shortly after. Both parties agreed to settle their differences outside of the courtroom in a way that would n’t require either party to admit fault or liability. A trial was scheduled to begin in June.
5. Crypto
Sam Bankman-Fried, who was once known as a cryptocurrency whiz kid, is scheduled to be sentenced today for his role in the demise of the FTX crypto exchange. Federal prosecutors want to sentence him to a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison for allegedly defrauding investors and stealing billions of dollars from his now-bankrupt crypto exchange. In what the prosecution has called one of the largest financial frauds in history, Bankman-Fried was found guilty in November of stealing more than$ 8 billion and engaging his employees in a years-long coverup. Under federal sentencing guidelines, he could face a maximum sentence of 110 years.
