Canada‘s population soared to a new peak of 40.77 million in 2023, propelled largely by temporary immigration, as stated by Statistics Canada on Wednesday. The nation welcomed an additional 1.27 million people in 2023, reflecting an increase of 3.2% from the previous year, marking the highest surge since 1957.
The surge in immigration has been linked to a casing scarcity, which has led to a boom in property prices and a decrease in value, therefore denting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s authorization ratings. Also, the people rise has contributed to a drop in the country’s gross domestic product per capita numbers and output levels, as indicated in the latest third, according to economists and the Bank of Canada.
” In 2023, the vast majority (97.6 % ) of Canada’s population growth came from international migration ( both permanent and temporary immigration ) and the remaining portion ( 2.4 % ) came from natural increase”, Statscan remarked. The third year in a row with a net increase of NPRs ( non-permanent residents ) was stated further:” This was the second consecutive year that temporary immigration led to population growth.”
According to the IMF’s 2021 report, almost a third of Canada’s population was non-native-born citizens in 2021, which is the highest percentage among the G7 countries. This is because the country has heavily relied on emigration to boost its work force and economic growth. Nevertheless, in recent months, Trudeau’s Liberal government has attempted to ease tension by limiting the number of foreign students and non-permanent people who come to Canada each year.
