Michigan Democratic Governor Critics are starting to criticize Gretchen Whitmer for her state’s “newcomer rental subsidy,” which awards up to$ 500 to landlords who rent to immigrants in response to the alleged murder of a woman by an illegal immigrant in Michigan.
The state website for Michigan states that the program, which was reported on this week by The Midwesterner, will improve access to better and more cheap housing options while supporting a more speedy social integration of refugees and another newcomer populations to Michigan.” Some refugees and other newcomers face important housing challenges.
According to the website, the Newcomer Rental Subsidy program “provides refugees and other Newcomer population-eligible households with rental assistance up to$ 500 per month for up to 12 months, with eligibility determined based on household income and immigration status.”
In order to be a recipient of the software, applicants must have an “eligible immigration position” that includes refugees, asylees, specific immigration visa holders, victims of human trafficking, Caribbean and Creole entrants, Afghan nationals, or Ukrainian charitable parolees.  ,
According to state guidance, a person or household may participate in the program for up to 12 months, and couples who live alone or with two people may receive a credit of up to$ 500 per month in households with up to six people.
Landlords have the option of receiving payments electronically or by check through a system known as SIGMA.  ,
” Payments will be made in three- month installments, first payment will be issued upon the application being approved”, the guidance explains. ” Additional payments will be made thereafter”.
In light of several high-profile instances of crimes being committed by illegal immigrants, including a recent murder in Michigan believed to have been carried out by a man in the United States illegally, Whitmer’s critics criticized the program and raised safety concerns.
By handing out cash to anyone who will accept unscreened illegal immigrants, Gretchen Whitmer is enabling Joe Biden’s open border policies, Tudor Dixon, who ran for governor against Whitmer in 2022, claimed.” Gretchen Whitmer is putting a risk on the safety of our neighborhoods and communities.  ,
Whitmer should immediately halt this program and demand that Biden secure the border for the good of Michiganns following Ruby Garcia’s recent murder.

The Whitmer administration appears to be focusing on reducing the state’s population loss by subsidizing housing for refugees and anyone who has applied for asylum, over half of which are routinely rejected, according to Michigan GOP State Representative Andrew Fink, who recently sponsored a bill that essentially bans sanctuary cities.  ,
