A new poll finds that Americans who voted for President Joe Biden in the previous presidential poll dislike former President Donald Trump’s emigration laws.
Special poll conducted for Newsweek by Redfield and Wilton found that more Trump voters support the development of a border wall between the U. S. and Mexico, 38 percentage, than oppose the idea, 34 percentage. A border roof is not supported or opposed by a third of the citizens. At the same time, 54 % of Trump 2020 voters support a border wall, and 54 % of respondents concur.
” Some people would have thought that ]a border wall ] is something that Democrats had never believe with”, Guadalupe Correa- Cabrera, a border security specialist and professor at George Mason University, told Newsweek. ” But, the politics of anxiety have reached the wider U. S. people”.

Although both Democratic and Republican presidents have built border fences, Trump has come to refer to the word “border walls,” which he made a crucial strategy promise during his 2016 campaign. During the Trump administration, 458 yards of the walls were built, 81 percentage of which replaced existing restrictions, according to a 2023 review by the U. S. Government Accountability Office. When Biden took office, he immediately ordered a “pause” on all border wall structure.
The issue of emigration has plagued Biden’s administration. Republicans have strongly criticized the administration for relaxing the strict guidelines under Trump since the early weeks of the Biden White House. With the record-breaking number of illegal immigrants entering the United States from the southern border, Biden faces yet another challenge in his now challenging re-election campaign.
According to the Redfield and Wilton surveys, 58 percent of Americans believe the country has no control over its southern borders, and 65 percent of Americans concur that the country is facing a migrant crisis. That includes 52 % of Biden supporters who believe the United States has no control over the border and 62 percent of Biden 2020 voters who think the country is experiencing a migrant crisis.
According to Peter Skerry, a professor of political science at Boston College, “decades of our elites—on both sides of the social divide] have now turned this matter into a crisis that can no longer remain side-stepped”
Correa-Cabrera claimed that Biden’s immigration issue is largely due to his strategy to combat the wave in immigrant arrivals.
” We have not seen him pretty active”, she said. ” He has been very responsive. He has been on the protection. He has been responding to and has n’t been doing so successfully.
Correa-Cabera suggested that Biden counteract the emigration myth by adopting a status similar to the one he took during his 2020 campaign, claiming that his group “always knows how to do this, but they have not been focusing on that.”
Skerry argued that it will be crucial for all political prospects to prioritize immigration as a top priority in their campaigns.
” Immigration is plainly going to be one of the powerful, if not the strong, issues in the 2024 vote”, Skerry said. There is no reason to believe that border crossings may decrease as the summer and spring approaches, unless the Biden administration implements some major policy changes, which it appears able or willing to do.
” If nothing else happens, if the U. S. does hardly enter into a battle or into an armed fight with Taiwan or anything big happens, this is going to be the election issue”, Correa- Cabrera agreed.
The Redfield and Wilton poll was conducted between March 23 and 24 with a trial size of 1, 500 ready U. S. citizens. It has a margin of error of + /- 2.53 percentage.
