In response to Republican lawmakers calling for stricter laws in the midst of nursing scholar Laken Riley’s death last month, Georgia’s GOP-controlled legislature has introduced an immigration enforcement bill.
The condition House gave last assent to HB 1105 in a 99- 75 voting Thursday evening, on the last day of Georgia’s congressional session, after the Senate passed the bill next week with a 34- 19 vote. The Republican governor is currently on the bill’s workplace. Brian Kemp, who has recently backed stricter immigration laws. The business of Kemp did not respond to CNN’s request for comment right away.
The section of the regulations coincides with a national debate that has become more and more controversial. National Republicans have used the incident to pressure the Biden administration to repress the illegal crossings at the southern boundary after Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, was accused of killing Riley, who was found dead on the University of Georgia’s school.
Local and state law enforcement may be required to check the immigration position of those over the age of 18, those in confinement, or those who an “officer has probable cause to believe” have committed a crime under HB 1105.
Local law enforcement organizations that do n’t work with immigration authorities could lose funding under the legislation, and those who do n’t ca n’t cooperate could face misdemeanor charges.
Republicans have argued that more restrictive boundary and immigration laws may defend Americans, frequently citing connections between illegal immigrants and violence, despite research that has found no such link.
Following the Senate vote next year, Georgia Senate Republicans announced in a blog on X that they are passing legislation to protect our position from legal illegal immigrants.
However, state Democrats have raised issues that the costs is unfair and may harm immigrant communities.
In a post on X, Democratic state Senator Nabilah Islam Parkes stated that the costs will lead to “racial monitoring of our immigrant areas” and that it will not make Georgians safer. He also claimed that the measure is” xenophobic.”
This measure builds on past attempts by the GOP-controlled legislature to address immigration. Senators passed HB301 next month, which purported to end sanctuary cities and counties in the state of particular state and federal funding.
Different states have taken various steps to implement strict immigration laws. A controversial Texas law may permit state and local authorities to make arrests for people they believe have crossed the southern border illegally. A federal appeals court announced on Tuesday that the law would continue to be obstructed while its supporters battled a number of legal issues.
The Laken Riley Act, which requires the confinement of any migrant who burglarized or stolen, was passed by the US House earlier this month.
