The six men who were repairing the Francis Scott Key Bridge, who died when it collapsed early on Tuesday night, were treated with respect and dignity, according to the article” Miguel Luna, a victim of the Key Bridge decline, was a kindhearted family man from El Salvador,” on March 27.
We are at a time in our land when good people like these — parents, husbands and a father — who are working hard doing extremely risky jobs are called “vermin, animals, criminals, rapists and murderers” by the good Republican nominee for president. I appreciate this much more accurate description of refugees to this country. It was helpful to get a small insight into their life from their coworkers and associates. Their murders are horrible and heartbreaking.
How did those family people survive without that passion and financial aid that is always present when someone who is providing for his or her family, children, or other extended family often raises the question. I watched as my mother learned new skills and began a career to provide for our home after my father passed away when the kids in our community were 14 years old, 6, and 2 years old. It was a tough time. The result was never assured.
But we were bright. We were never demonized. We were never pursued by immigration authorities. My mother did n’t make an effort to provide for her own people in another country.
Thank you for including the name of the immigration advocacy organization CASA in your policy and for including the GoFundMe website. As readers of The Baltimore Sun move past the immediate impact of this information and the passing of these six brave men, I just hope that we will be more measured in our speeches, more sympathetic in our activities, and more knowledgeable about the people who came to the United States for liberty and a better lifestyle.
A good place to start might be to email CASA in Baltimore or read the book,” Everyone Who Is Gone Is Here: The United States, Central America, and the Making of a Crisis” by Jonathan Blitzer.
