On March 28, 2024, U. S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez published a post on X ( formerly Twitter ) directed at billionaire Elon Musk, reminding him of the fact that he was an immigrant to the United States (archived ):
Her article, which gained 122, 000 loves and was reshared 13, 000 times, as of this writing, came in response to a state by Musk that the Democratic Party’s aim was to get more voters by allowing them to be in the United States. He shared this thought in reaction to a Daily Caller report that U. S. President Joe Biden was considering “handing out green cards to illegal immigrants”  , (archived ):

By that explanation, Elon Musk is certainly an immigrant. He was born in South Africa, and in 1988, his mother gave him American citizenship. In 1992, he enlisted as a student at the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1995, he immigrated to California. He became a U. S. resident in 2002.
In 2016, a declare began to circulate that he had been, for a time, an illegal refugee. Snopes truth- checked that state and found that it was untested, although , his nephew, Kimbal Musk, had joked during an exam that the two sons spent some time in the country as “illegal refugees”.
Ocasio-Cortez responded that asking for asylum does not violate U.S. law (archived ) when asked about how Musk’s case was different from that of people who” jump the border.

Ocasio-Cortez had a right to note that applying for prison is acceptable in the United States.

If the judge finds that all of the requirements are met, the man may sit and be granted a “green card” — permanent resident status.
A green cards allows a person to live and operate in the U. S. It does not, however, allow them to vote. Green cards are a move towards membership, but they can be , revoked. By law, a permanent resident must wait at least five years to apply for citizen, except if they are married to a U. S. member, in which case the wait is three years.
