    Rep. Jamie Raskin, pro-Palestinian protests

University ends Democrat president’s presentation shortly after repeated breaks

Darryll Pines, president of the University of Maryland, defended pro-Palestinian activists who yelled down a Democrat congressman as he delivered a visitor lecture on democracy on campus.

Pines ended U. S. Rep. Jamie Raskin’s speak first due to repeated interruptions, afterwards, he described the protesters ‘ activities as “free speech”, according to the Maryland Reporter.

According to Pines, “what you saw play out was really democracy, free speech, and intellectual freedom.” ” From our view as a school, there are the hard discussions that we should be having”.

Additionally, the school president claimed that the demonstrators should have been more legal.

Raskin, a Hebrew Democrat who represents Maryland in Congress, was invited to deliver the Irving and Renee Milchberg Endowed Lecture on Thursday at the school. His chat was titled” Democracy, Autocracy and the Concern to Reason in the 21st Century”.

    The Maryland Reporter reports:

Just a few days after, pro-Palestinian protesters who were shouting that Raskin was” complicit in genocide” interrupted his remarks. In response, Raskin said that he wished the demonstrators had engaged in a chat with him, rather than “heckling”.

Raskin emphasized that he has backed a two-state option and has taken a powerful place on the release of the hostages held by Hamas. As he attempted to maintain his lesson, protesters continued stopping and shouting. Since the Hamas-led assault on Israel on October 7th, numerous activists have questioned Raskin’s activities.

If you are one of the people who represent the new peace activity, Raskin said. ” Because you’re not engaging in genuine conversation with people and you’re no persuading person.”

Raskin after interrupted his statement and responded with questions, but the event was eventually ended, according to the document.

During his University of Maryland lecture last week, Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin constantly was interrupted by pro-Palestine protesters.

Afterwards, Raskin told the news channel he believes “drowning out” a listener is” totally opposed to the nature of free manifestation”.

Some criticized the college president for defending the demonstrators ‘ activities, including&nbsp, Nico Perrino, executive vice president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.

” What you saw sing out was crowd repression. It was the epitome of democracy and a bastardization of complimentary speech, Perrino wrote on X. ” These shout-downs take place on college campuses much too frequently, and with the consent of school administrators.”

According to Nicholas Christakis, a professor at Yale University,” Preventing others from being heard is not free speech.” Protest is great. Not if it prevents the audience from hearing a college speaker’s voice.
