Yasuke, an American man who fighted for Chinese daimyo and warrior Oda Nobunaga, was described as a samurai by many sources, including Britannica and Smithsonian Magazine. It is disputed if he was truly a warrior, though, according to Fake History Hunter.
There were several hundred Africans living in Japan during Yasuke’s day, according to Smithsonian Magazine. Natalia Doan, a writer with the University of Oxford, told Smithsonian Magazine that they “worked as translators, men, entertainers” among different functions.
