President Joe Biden’s U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services ( USCIS ) announced Monday that the administration had added” Another Gender Identity” as a” third gender option” designated as” X” on the naturalization application form for immigrants.
In a speech shared Monday on X, previously Twitter, the USCIS announced,” USCIS is introducing a second female choice,’ X,’ defined as’ Another Gender Identity.'”
In a press release by the USCIS, the agency noted that the registration application form, labeled” Form N- 400″ had been updated to incorporate” Another Sex Identity” as an option.
” Now we published a new version of Form N- 400, the primary type to include the X sex option”, the company wrote. As we work through them, extra types will have this option available.
Formal policy changes were also included in the USCIS statement. According to the plan alter,” significant barriers” were created for people who do not recognize as male or female by restricting the citizenship documents to only two sex options.

The third female option does not require “provide supporting documentation,” according to the USCIS. Also, the identity designated by the person on the registration documents will not be required to suit the gender marked on an individual’s state identification, passport, or birth certificate.
The USCIS stated that adding a third gender option “helps both external stakeholders and individuals requesting immigration benefits” and “helps ensure that secure identity documents and biographical data are accurate. It also goes against federal and state agencies that have adopted a third gender option, such as the U.S. Department of State’s expanded passport services that now allow users to enter gender X in their applications.
The USCIS’s change in policy on Monday comes in response to a previous Biden administration statement from 2021 that stated the administration would prioritize transgender immigrants entering the country.
