According to a proposal to require the sector with a mandatory code of conduct, large Australian supermarkets could face fines of up to$ 10 million ( US$ 6.57 million ) for misconduct.
The Labor government’s interim report ( pdf ) was released on April 8 as part of a review of the voluntary Food and Grocery Code of Conduct, which governs the interactions between retailers and customers.
Previous Labor Minister Craig Emerson, who led the assessment, stated that the current script was ineffective in managing the attitude of stores.
He claimed in the statement that “it contains no penalties for vulnerabilities, and stores you opt out of significant rules by overriding them in their food supply contracts.”
