The opposition-religious Law and Justice party won the local elections on Sunday, keeping its position as Poland’s largest political party in a punch to totalitarian Prime Minister Donald Tusk in his first political test since taking office in December.
The conservative Law and Justice ( PiS ) party received 33.7 % of the votes in the Sunday local elections in Poland, according to Ipsos exit polling, Gazeta Wyborcza reports.
The PiS when suddenly bested the , Civic Coalition of Prime Minister Tusk, which came in second at 31.9 per share. This is in line with the political communist bloc The Left and the centrist party-dominated parliamentary elections in October, when the PiS won the most votes of any gathering and was forced to retake control of the government after Tusk formed a coalition government.
Unlike the political elections, there was a major change for Tusk’s partnership lovers, with the Third Way projected to have secured 13.5 per share of the ballot on Sunday, compared to 8.6 in October while The Left fell from 12.6 per share in October to only 6.8 per share on Sunday. The more centrist Third Way bloc’s attempt to steer the Tusk government away from leftist policies could result in internal divisions as a result of the local election results.
The PiS will aim to build on the momentum of their ninth consecutive victory in the national election before the June election campaign for the European Parliament. The internal division within the Tusk government will benefit the PiS even more.

Commenting on the victory PiS leader , JarosÅ‚aw KaczyÅ„ski, said , per WPolityce:” For those who wanted to hide us, as Mark Twain once said: ‘ Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated'”.
KaczyÅ„ski added:” This result shows that today we could get clearly more in parliamentary elections, we could perhaps even gain power. However, it was an election in more than three years. We must also triumph in the European elections before the presidential election is over.
” Today’s success should be treated as an encouragement – an encouragement to act decisively, energetically, to expand our party, and also to create a grand coalition that will win, because Poland must be a country ruled by Polish patriots and honest people”.
This sentiment was seconded by PiS lawmaker , Beata Szydlo, who , wrote on X:” We won today and we will win soon in the European elections. And let Tusk remain a fake and troll in his world.
The PiS made up for its continued difficulties with urban voters in Poland’s major cities with strong support in the country’s rural areas, including the support of many farmers, who have frequently used their tractors to thwart border crossings with Ukraine, which Tusk had hoped would improve relations with.
Farmers across Europe are likely to be affected by the tariff-free imports of cheap Ukrainian agriculture in the coming year, in addition to the negative effects of the EU’s green agenda, as the pushback against the green agenda, along with anger over the economy and rising anti-mass migration sentiments, aim to support conservative and populist parties throughout the EU.

The elections on Sunday also featured a condemnation of Prime Minister Tusk’s strongman tactics since taking office, including firing the heads of Television Poland and Polish Radio over alleged concerns about their alleged spread of “propaganda” by the former , the shut down of state broadcaster TV Info, and dismissing the heads of the management and supervisory boards of Television Poland and Polish Radio.
Additionally, Tusk has been accused of using the legal system to arrest his political rivals, which was allegedly done by former prime minister Mateusz Morawicki, who was also a former prime minister.
Supporters of the government have urged Tusk to continue his crackdown on the main opposition party despite the defeat on Sunday, according to prominent neo-liber journalist Tomasz Lis, who claims that the” PiS is still powerful.” DePiSization must be faster, deeper and merciless”.
Looking further afield towards the next general election in Poland, which must take place on or before November 11th of 2027, former PiS deputy prime minister , Jacek Sasin argued that the party should look to build relationships with potential coalition partners, including the centre- right , Polish People’s Party ( PSL), which is currently in a coalition with Tusk’s government.
Sasin added that the populist nationalist group, Confederation bloc, which has previously criticized the PiS and turned down coalition efforts due to concerns that the PiS is too centrist, should form an alliance. Sasin also claimed that the Law and Justice party’s “natural coalition partner” would be the Confederation, which is projected to have received 7.5 % of the vote on Sunday.
