Speaker Mike Johnson ( R- La. ) has accepted the request of Senate conservatives to postpone the filing of two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas until the following year.
On Wednesday, the House was scheduled to give the content to the Senate.
The House will send the prosecution content to the Senate next week to ensure that the Senate has enough time to carry out its constitutional duties. According to Johnson’s spokesman Taylor Haulsee, there is no justification for the Senate to renounce its authority to hold an impeachment trial.
Mike Lee, the chairman of the Utah Senate Steering Committee, stated to reporters on Tuesday evening that he was “very thankful to Speaker Johnson for his willingness to wait this.”
According to Lee,” We do n’t want this to come on the eve of the moment when members might be operating under the influence of jet-fumigation,” Lee said, referring to the expectation that the Senate would vote on whether to table the articles of impeachment on Thursday just before senators were scheduled to fly back to their home states for the weekend.
He continued,” It’s much better for us to do this at the beginning of a congressional year than at the end of one,” and I thank him for doing that.
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell ( Ky. ) stated earlier on Tuesday that Johnson is ultimately in charge of determining when the House’s impeachment managers will decide whether or not to hear the charges against Mayorkas.
When the prosecution managers make their display, the Senate’s prosecution procedures may get put into motion.
Senators may take the oath of office the day after the House prosecution committees presented the content in the Senate room.
The lecture was actually scheduled to happen at 5 p. m. Wednesday.
However, it will compete for ground time with legislation that will stretch the FISA expanded surveillance authorities by putting off the process until the following week. That act faces an April 19 timeframe.
