WASHINGTON ( NEXSTAR ) — Wednesday should have been the day that the Senate’s hearing on Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had begun, but Mayorkas instead spent the day defending his position in front of the same people who are looking to fire him.
” I do understand the challenges at our border, and I certainly do n’t dance around them”, Mayorkas told members of the House Appropriations Committee.
Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa ) told Mayorkas during the hearing that she does n’t want him to be in charge of the border at all while the House and Senate appropriators approved more than$ 108 billion for his agency on Wednesday.
” Mr. Secretary, we have seen gadgets and sportsmanship in the leadership, and I called for your departure last year and I stand by my demand,” Hinson said.
Hinson was one of the many House Republicans who voted in February to remove Secretary Mayorkas from office for violating federal laws and failing to enforce immigration laws.
The Senate may begin the test procedure as soon as House prosecution managers deliver the papers to the Senate. That was supposed to occur on Wednesday, but some Republicans said later on Tuesday that they needed more time.
Sen. John Kennedy (R-La. ) said,” Maybe talking about it for a few days before we take the Constitution and turn it upside down just might be a wise thing to do.” said.
Kennedy claims that the additional day will help them win more supporters because not all Republicans are favorable to a test.
” We have some costless- range birds”, Kennedy said. And they leave, and we occasionally ca n’t catch them.
Mayorkas was defended by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and refuted the prosecution allegations.
” We’re gonna try and resolve this issue as quickly as possible”, Schumer said.
