According to officials, many asylum applicants are choosing to enter the country illegally and surrender rather than spend weeks waiting in shelters for a CBP One session.

As the city’s population of asylum seekers drops, Tijuana’s migrant shelters are reported to be operating at 50 % to 60 % capacity.

Enrique Lucero, chairman of the Migrant Affairs Office in Tijuana, reports that there are now about 3, 000 migrants seeking shelter companies, up from 5, 000 at the same time next year.

He also thinks that many workers have chosen to cross the border illegally and hand themselves to Border Patrol agents instead of staying at homes while awaiting CBP One sessions.

The CBP One app enables asylum seeking to obtain meetings to enter the country through a port of entry and, for the most part, begin their legal situations while residing in the country.

” They are not waiting for a CBP One visit”, said Lucero. ” They do n’t want to wait six months for an appointment”.

California’s once-hot spot for migrant crossings is 90 % lower.

Lucero stated they’ve noticed that most workers coming to Tijuana are then Mexican immigrants, no foreign content.

” Most workers from other countries are in Tapachula, Chiapas and they’re never coming here”.

One broker who serves between San Diego and Tijuana claims that there are also fewer workers entering the San Diego Sector’s ports of entry.

Although March and April’s formal figures are not yet made public, he claims that” they have been moving comparatively slowly compared to what they were seeing at the end of 2023.”

From the start of the Fiscal Year 2024 on Oct. 1, 2023, to Feb. 29, 2024, border officials from the San Diego Sector have encountered 151, 686 migrants crossing into the land improperly between ports of entry. During the same time last year, there were 86 and 147 contacts.

Border Report has also noticed that recently, there have been considerably uncovered areas where refugees have been forced to wait until agents may apprehend them.
