SAN DIEGO ( Border Report )— The air quality in Tijuana has reached” critical levels” during the first quarter of 2024, especially in areas near the border.
Carlos Bustamante, with Baja California’s Breathe Association, says the pollution is now as bad as Mexico City, which has some of the worst heat pollution in Latin America, according to the World Health Organization.
Bustamante blames automotive prospects along Zona Rio, a popular destination for travellers traveling to the San Ysidro Port of Entry, near Tijuana City and along Zona Rio.
The town has an unusually high rate of car visits, according to the statement.
He claims that Bustamente does n’t see any short-term relief because the main transit points for entering the US are crammed with cars every day.
” Many cars are moving, polluting the air we breathe, and we are seeing hundreds of them emit gases that are contaminating the culture.”
Bustamante claimed that every day the area releases a moderate to poor level of air quality.
” Due to the complexity of the region, it’d be hard to mandate people do n’t drive their cars. It’s time to, sometimes, apply better public transportation options, although public transportation is already saturated in the area, especially during rush time”, he said.
According to Bustamante, Tijuana will continue to rise in the charts if things do n’t change in the country’s most polluted cities.
Now, he says, Tijuana is one step below Mexico City and six above Mexicali, Baja California’s investment capital.
According to the World Health Organization, Tijuana’s heat has three to five times the amount of pollutants that are permitted on a daily basis.
