I Go to College in DC. Why Is It So Unsafe Here?

The terms every family dreads when a kid goes off to academy:” Mom, Dad. For an effective shooter, my college is locked out. This has been repeated to my kids. &nbsp,

In my three times at The Catholic University of America, also known as CUA, violence has become a normal occurrence. &nbsp,

Next week, CUA issued a sanctuary- in- area order because a 14- year- ancient was shot and killed at the campus Metro station. The think who was detained was 17 years old. &nbsp,

A&nbsp, social research professor was mugged, shot, and killed on my college last July. &nbsp, A big body stain was left where he died for weeks afterwards, a friend who was on school at the time said. &nbsp,

CUA locked down last April because of a” swatting” scam. A bad actor pretends to be an active shooter on campus in this scene by making a false 911 call. So, &nbsp, police SWAT team are called and answer despite no real danger. &nbsp,

When I was in class at the time, colleagues offered to stop the doors with a seat in front of them. I am&nbsp, glad that it was a fake alarms. &nbsp,

Screenshot of an message sent by CUA through RAVE on April 13 at 10: 10 a. m.? &nbsp,

Last May, in the area opposite to college, a guy confessed to killing and beheading a plumber. &nbsp,

In freshman year, I saw group crime first. At the school stop, I witnessed two males beating each other until one of the men jumped onto the train while waiting for a Metro station. What appeared to be a broken head on the other’s mouth was dripping in blood. He called someone on a cel phone and screamed about needing a ski mask so people&nbsp, would n’t &nbsp, recognize him. &nbsp,

Every time a crime is reported in the area around the school, the Catholic University of America sends alerts to the scholar system. To the credit of CUA, it updates kids as much as possible. That said, I see that muggings, carjackings, murders, and other violent acts occur simple blocks apart from my bedroom almost weekly. &nbsp,

My college is in Washington, D. C. In a town with such strict gun rules, you may expect safer roads. You ca n’t open carry a firearm in the District of Columbia, the city requires universal background checks and bans “assault weapons” .&nbsp, &nbsp,

The elected government of the nation’s capital does n’t support the” castle doctrine” of a person’s right to defend his own home. In D. C., there is a “duty to retreat” .&nbsp,

If the state’s gun legislation are working, how is it that I have had to conceal twice because of effective guns? &nbsp,

The District has seen a rise in crime. For my college paper, I wrote about it last season. Violent crime jumped 23 % from February 2022 to February 2023. Attack, muggings, and carjackings have gone away. &nbsp,

The boost in carjackings next year prompted D. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, to give out wheel- roller doors. &nbsp,

Leftist billionaire financier George Soros is known for his efforts to reform the criminal justice system by spending large sums of money on the campaigns of district attorney candidates for soft-on-crime in various parts of the country. Once elected, these liberal DAs have trumped the efforts of so- called diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI. &nbsp,

However, these efforts come at a significant cost to students like me. Our safety is the cost of their progressive policies. &nbsp,

Violent criminals who have been found guilty or not charged anywhere in the country are serving shorter prison sentences. &nbsp,

Recently, it was discovered that significant cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles failed to provide crime data to the FBI. &nbsp,

According to an op-ed published in the Washington Examiner and cowritten by former Assistant FBI Director Mark Morgan, the FBI erred in calculating violent crimes. The bureau claims that crime in major cities has decreased, but it has actually increased over the past five years. &nbsp,

The Major Cities Chiefs Association, a group that was cited in the op-ed and collects police data, claims that homicides in major cities have increased by 23 % since the publication of the article. The Council of Criminal Justice, a similar organization, estimates that homicide is up 18 % and violent crime in general is up 8 %.? &nbsp,

Matthew Graves, the U. S. attorney for the District of Columbia, serves as the local prosecutor in the nation’s capital. An appointee of President Joe&nbsp, Biden, Graves&nbsp, is embroiled in a case stemming from the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, that has caused scandal and division throughout the country. &nbsp,

When it conflicts with his woke ideals, can I trust Graves to be tough on crime? Do I have to rely on him to keep me safe? &nbsp,

Right now, thousands of parents are preparing their children for college, buying mattress toppers, laptops, and red solo cups. However, the reality is that many students, especially females, also will purchase personal alarms and pepper spray. &nbsp,

Why is this our reality? It is mostly our own fault. &nbsp,

We choose our leaders. The government only gives the governed’s consent before implementing the law. This is good news, though, the political reality is in our hands. We need to call out lawmakers who are anti-crime, engage in civic engagement, and stop sitting still while students of all ages are forced to face the poverty of our country’s cities. &nbsp,

Our cities will only become safer when we confront the awakened mob. &nbsp,
