Senator Tina Smith ( D- MN) said Sunday on ABC’s” This Month” that American girls were” not going to be conned” by former President Donald Trump’s claims ‘ right position on abortion.
Limited text as follows:
SMITH: Well, you know, first of all, I just want to suggest, George, that American women are not going to get conned by Donald Trump and his remarks about pregnancy. We are aware that he is in charge of the events that are occurring throughout the nation, both in Arizona and elsewhere. But, that’s the bottom line, I think, as we think about the election coming up.
Regarding the Comstock Act, OK, so this is a 150-year-old law that has long been buried in history, but Trump judges and even the US Supreme Court are making up this as a justification for why people should n’t be able to order an abortion via mail. So we need to pay attention to this and make sure that we are making sure that we are doing everything we can to safeguard women’s right to choose between their own bodies and their own life.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Is there anything else President Biden could be doing right now to defend those rights?
SMITH: I’m truly thankful that the president has done all that he possibly can to safeguard people’s privileges. And he is currently fighting to ensure that the FDA’s decision-making is what rules and not the result of some Trump determine from Texas, which is what is happening before the Supreme Court right then.
But, in my opinion, they are making every effort possible. To ensure that the privileges of Roe are implemented, we must get these elections.
STEPHANOPOULOS: You say that the American people will not be conned by Donald Trump, but his position now is relatively clear, is n’t it, saying this should be a state by state issue?
SMITH: Well, but think about what that means accurately. He stated initially that he is the one who is blatantly to blame for overturning Roe. One in three American people who reside in states where contraception is currently essentially prohibited are the source of all this conflict and violence.
He also mentioned how well these state bans are operating as they should only a few days ago. Request a woman in Arizona or Texas if she believes this method is effective. Because, for her, this is n’t a political discussion. This is about her choices for herself in her personal lifestyle and her personal life.
