As Democrats seek a swift departure of the charges against him, one of the leading Democratic skeptics of the effort to remove Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is calling for a conversation on his prosecution.
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), who is retiring from the Senate in January, is one of a select few Democratic centrists who could support Democrats in rejecting the prosecution articles after lawmakers are sworn in for what might be an shortened test on Wednesday.
He recently said Mayorkas, who is charged with willfully ignoring federal immigration law, has never committed the “high crimes and misdemeanors ” that would permit impeachment.
But he, like another Senate Republicans, told investigators on Tuesday that he does not want to see the prosecution papers, which passed the House in February, dismissed without some sort of operation.
Immediately after the trial is convened, Democrats are expected to make a movement to bring them up.
“ I want to have a debate and discussion of the articles of impeachment, whether that ’s in trial or in committee or whether there’s a time limit, but I don’t think that there should be a tabling without any process whatsoever, ” he said.
The Mayorkas test has been thrown new doubt due to Romney’s comments, which were made shortly before House managers passed the prosecution rules to the Senate. Republicans can now discuss a number of motions to sign-up their protest, according to leadership.
Democrats have accused Mayorkas of being unfairly impeached for what amounts to a plan debate, and they think the prosecution was socially motivated. Republicans have, however, mostly stated that completely skipping a trial may set precedent in a bad way.
Romney is not the only one who has called for purchase. Sen. Another moderate who has expressed interest in a trial’s termination called for a approach, but she did not specify whether that would include discussion of the impeachment articles.
“ I think it ’s going to be better for everybody if there’s a process, ” she told the Washington Examiner.
A Mayorkas test has been proposed by Senate Republicans in a variety of locations. Sen. Sen. Lee (R-UT), who is obstructing ground business over the anticipated dismissal, wants the country director to be tried before the entire Senate, while Sen. Lee (R-UT) opposes that view. Ted Cruz (R-TX ) has proposed a select committee.
Democrats are expected to make small agreements, including a few points of purchase that would allow Republicans to raise potential Senate infractions. However, they appear to be ready to proceed without a test.

Sen. John Thune (R-SD ), the No. Senate 2 Republican, stated to reporters that the GOP convention lunch on Tuesday would be about impeachment.
We have people who are varying in their understanding of how to handle and approach the posts, Thune said. “Clearly, we all want a test, which the Democrats aren’t going to give us. The question is, you know, what does the procedure look like? ”
