El Paso County authorities are celebrating a milestone in the management of the years-long charitable migratory crisis. Their Migrant Support Services Center has then assisted 100,000 asylum seekers in reaching their preferred destination.
This success highlights the key function the facility has played in the continuous effort to welcome and assist those in desperate need, according to the county’s statement on Wednesday.
The El Paso region’s migration facility opened in October 2022 when more than 2,000 people were crossing the border daily. Its main function was to quickly support asylum seekers in making travel arrangements after being released from federal immigration detention. This made it easier for volunteer shelters to handle the immigrant community in the area during upheaval and to prevent people from having to sit on the streets.
The center first accepted only one adults, but it later accepted families. The funds are provided for the middle by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It will do so at least until September 2025, according to state officials.
Immigrant contacts have gone up and down in the past 18 months, now averaging about 1,000 per time. However, the facility remains available from 7 a. m. to 7 p. m. year-round, state authorities said.
