At the UN Security Council on Thursday, the United States abused its filibuster to prevent a Palestinian state from being formally declared.
A Palestinian state should be established following agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, according to American policy for years. The White House shied away from probable vetoes until the State Department made the announcement that the U.S. had remained cautious until the final days before the UN Security Council voting. In the name of a comprehensive peace agreement that would end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the United States has exerted great effort and determination to help Arab statehood.
President Biden has made it clear since the October 7 attacks that a two-state solution, with Israel’s security guaranteed, may only bring about lasting peace in the region. No other option offers the stability and prospects of a political Israeli state.
There is no other way to ensure that Palestinians you live in a state of their own in peace and with integrity. And Saudi Arabia is just one of the few ways that Israel and all of its Muslim neighbors can integrate regionally.
We’ve even long made it abundantly clear that excessive actions taken here in New York, even with the best purposes, will not lead to statehood for the Arab people.
We as Security Council members have a specific obligation to make sure that our actions are in line with the UN Charter and the goals of international peace and security.
There was not unanimity among Committee Members regarding whether the respondent met the requirements for participation as stated in Article 4 of the UN Charter, as stated in the entrance committee’s report.
For instance, there are unanswered questions about whether a candidate qualifies as a State.
We have long demanded that the Palestinian Authority carry out the necessary measures to help create the conditions for independence, and we are pleased to note that Hamas, a criminal business, is now exerting power and influence in Gaza, an essential component of the condition envisioned in this decision.
For these reasons, the United States voted “no” on this Security Council resolution.
The U. S. attempted to portray a Palestinian state as something that Hamas and its Iranian supporters may oppose, despite Hamas denying the existence of the United States. S. filibuster.
The filibuster was welcomed by Israel. At the UN or elsewhere, the Jewish authorities had argued that recognizing a Palestinian state would encourage Hamas for its past hostility.
