Dengue fever circumstances surpassed 5 total. This year, there will be 2 million people in the Americas in 2024, according to a United Nations health agency that refers to it as an “emergency circumstance.” ”
Jarbas Barbosa, director of the Pan American Health Organization ( PAHO ), confirmed the shockingly high numbers at a press briefing Thursday, the Daily Mail reported.
The number of cases has increased by almost 50 % from the already alarming 3. 5 million cases were identified as of last quarter.
“We are in an emergency situation because of dengue, ” Barbosa told reporters.
Over 1,800 people have died across the Americas from the mosquito-borne condition, a leap from the roughly 1,000 incidents “reported next month in the year through March. ”
While saying that “there seems to be a stability, or even a decrease ” in the number of instances in certain states, the heath director reported that South American countries like Argentina and Brazil “still have a very powerful distribution. ”

In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on April 17, 2024, a representative from the municipal health ministry checks a home building courtyard for mosquito larvae. More than 3 mosquito cases are reported in the Southern Hemisphere each year. 5 million cases reported across the region, 83 % of which are concentrated in Brazil, according to the Pan American Health Organization. Warning that the existing dengue vaccine has “very limited ” presence, Barbosa said that an outbreak may be strong, even with an increase in supply.
The dengue vaccine can help significantly reduce severe cases of incidents, but it will take time before the vaccine’s results can be reflected in the drop in mosquito cases, he said.
According to the Daily Mail, “tent facilities were erected in Brasilia and different places at corporate positions to screening people with the disease ” because the disease has spread so quickly in Brazil.
Dengue has been nicknamed the “bone-breaking disease ” [more commonly “breakbone fever” ] because it can cause “joint and muscle pain so severe that it feels as if the bones are breaking, ” the outlet noted.
According to PAHO, about 500 million persons in the Americas now are “at chance ” of contracting mosquito.
Despite the severity of the disorder , the mortality rate was merely 0. 051 percentage in 2023. A patient normally recovers after the uncomfortable symptoms and pain of the flu have subsided.
Two locally transmitted cases have been reported in Florida this year in the United States. Outside of the Sunshine State, no mosquito patients have yet been registered.
