Pope Francis warned that the continent is “falling into ruin” as a result of humanity’s failure to protect it on Monday in a message to commemorate Earth Day.

Our generation has left some treasures, but we have neglected to protect the planet and maintain peace, the pope rebuked. on X ( former Twitter ).

“We are called to become artisans and caretakers of our common home, the Earth which is ‘falling into ruin, ’” he declared, followed by “# EarthDay. ”

Pope Francis criticized humanity for its inaction on the planet in a similar way to the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in 2020, blaming animal selfishness for the planet’s demise.

The pope said at the time,” Because of our ego, we have failed in our duty to be caretakers and managers of the world,” at the time. We only need to take a close look at the facts to realize that our popular home is in serious disrepair. ”

“We have polluted and despoiled it, endangering our very lives, ” he continued. For this reason, several regional and international motions have sprung up to challenge our consciences. ”

“ I greatly appreciate these activities; However, it will be necessary for our kids to demonstrate to us that we have no prospect if we destroy the very atmosphere that sustains us, ” he said in a text fitting his reward for climate activist Greta Thunberg and her Fridays for Future activity.

“We have failed to care for the earth, our garden-home; we have failed to care for our brothers and sisters, ” Francis said. “We have sinned against the earth, against our neighbors, and ultimately against the Creator, the benevolent Father who provides for everyone, and desires us to live in communion and flourish together. ”

Certain scholars, however, have cast their gaze back to the origins of Earth Day in 1970, pointing to its flawed founders and urging a healthy skepticism of climate change  panic.

Professor of economics at the University of Michigan, Mark J. Perry, for instance, penned an essay in 2016 enumerating “18 spectacularly wrong predictions ” made around the time of the first Earth Day in 1970.

According to Harvard biologist George Wald, civilization would end “within 15 or 30 years ” unless immediate action is taken to address the issues facing humanity. Paul Ehrlich also remarked that population would “inevitably and completely outstrip any small increases in food supplies we make” and that death rate would rise until at least 100 to 200 million people per year will be starving to death in the next ten years. ”

No one is exempt from this task, Pope Francis reaffirmed Monday as Pope Francis ‘ call for a coordinated international effort to combat climate change. https ://t. co/sEkJne8tzj

Harrison Brown, a scientist at the National Academy of Sciences, said that humanity would totally run out of copper shortly after 2000, and that lead, zinc, tin, gold, and silver would be gone before 1990.

Ecologist Kenneth Watt told  Time  that no portion of our land will be usable if nitrogen is being accumulated at the current rate of nitrogen buildup and that it will only take a few years before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere. Watt also predicted an upcoming ice age and said that there would no longer be any more crude oil by the year 2000.

“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years, ” he declared.

The world will be roughly four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000, if current trends continue. He claimed that this is roughly twice what it would take to bring us into the ice age.
