So we move on from watching the San-Ti connect with a select group of people on Earth and how this affects humanity as a whole, to moments where one man-child companion encourages another man-child colleague to tell another figure how he feels about her. Needless to say, this makes for gradual transition and little tension.
Some of the other account flaws start to come to mind around this place in the display. For example, the San- Ti are an superior race of creatures with inexplicable technical skills, but apparently they the n’t understand the human capacity for falsehood and deception.
They also like to use childish nicknames, breaking into every digital device and projector screen to threaten the user with the message” YOU ARE BUGS.” The director of the United Kingdom’s national security is in charge of a global project to build a spaceship to meet the San-Ti on their way to Earth for unannounced reasons. As for the rest of the world, they appear to continue mindlessly while a few randomly chosen scientists work their way.
However, it’s unlikely the show could be saved at this point, even with better-looking actors giving better performances and writing a better script. Beyond the plot holes and flaws in execution, the story of” 3 Body Problem” rests on a weak logical foundation. And no, this is n’t always related to the adaptation of the novel to the screen ( a common issue with science fiction ), but rather to the creators ‘ stupid choices that reflect a subpar worldview.
The series obviously tries to speak to the importance of science, scientists, and humanity understanding itself in a larger context. However, the show’s depiction of scientists and their work is laughably inaccurate. Instead of doing actual science ( i. e., performing experiments, processing and interpreting data, debating theories, etc. ), the scientists in the show mainly hang out at the bar, sleep around, tease one another over brunch, get drunk or high regularly, and play video games to solve difficult scientific puzzles.
And the handful of scientists featured do n’t appear to have reached their conclusions on their own and take their own decisions on humanity’s behalf rather than working collectively on projects that would easily require hundreds of competent professionals. At no point do the characters really consider the ethical, cultural, and political implications of their discoveries, whereas in the real world, there are several institutions devoted to addressing these questions.
Contrast this subpar portrayal of scientists with a movie like” Oppenheimer,” which went to great lengths to get the details right. The work of countless scientists and engineers was a daunting task that required immense effort and expertise. The greatest marvel is not the size of the enterprise, its secrecy, nor its cost, but the achievement of scientific minds in putting together infinitely complex pieces of knowledge held by many men in different fields of science into a workable plan, as President Truman himself stated in a speech given right after dropping the first atomic bomb, Christopher Nolan deserves a lot of praise for successfully capturing this reality and creating believable drama out of it.
On the other hand, Benioff and Weiss deserve a lot of criticism for neglecting this crucial aspect of their story. It’s clear they did little homework about the workings of modern science, the people involved, or the way this affects society at large. Although these details would have been fascinating to explore, Benioff and Weiss seem more inclined to give screen time to pointless discussions between a few misanthropic Boomers and whiny Millennials muttering cliché monologues about the evil of humanity.
