Mexican army touts capture of Jalisco cartel leader’s sibling, but expert says it wo n’t make a difference
Abraham Oseguera Cervantes was detained by the Latino troops in the state of Jalisco on Sunday while he was armed with two weapons and unknown amounts of drugs. Oseguera, aka” Don Rodo”, is considered “one of the principal coordinators of logistics and financial operations” for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel ( CJNG ), the Defense Ministry ( SEDENA ) said in a statement.
He is the family of El Mencho, aka Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, who the U.S. Justice Department considers to be one of the largest producers of methadone and other illegal drugs from Mexico. For his capture, the Drug Enforcement Administration is offering a$ 10 million reward.
” Because Abraham ( Oseguera ) is considered a principal operator in that structure ( the Jalisco cartel ) and a generator of violence, this action represents a major blow against that criminal organization”, the statement said. This year, a number of Mexican media outlets aired leaked images of military escorting Abraham Oseguera in jeans, a plaid clothing, and handcuffs as he stepped off an airport in Mexico City before being transferred to a maximum-security jail.
Global stability experts, however, are not as cheerful as the Mexican authorities that the imprisonment of Mencho’s sibling may dent CJNG’s network of morphine to the United States.
” We’ve seen the arrest of high-ranking members of these organizations ( cartels ).” It does n’t tend to make a whole lot of variation”, said Mike Ballard, vice president of knowledge at Virginia- based World Guardian security team. The show may continue and these organizations will continue to operate if one leader, captain, or member of the top management is detained or killed.
In the past, Nemesio Oseguera’s family has been detained, and the Jalisco syndicate has grown stronger rather than less effective. According to the DEA, CJNG and the Sinaloa cartel are turning in billions of dollars from the sale of morphine because they can make an unlawful$ 10 medication for nothing.
DEA Administrator Anne Milgram told a House committee last year that these organizations are present in all 50 states in the US and 100 international countries.
” There may be some after- effects internally, where they operate a little bit more carefully, but I do n’t think this is going to have a long- or even short- term impact on their operations”, Ballard said.
Because 2024 is the year of the presidential election, both countries ‘ Center for the United States and Mexico, Tony Payan, director of the Center for the United States and Mexico, said he anticipated that Mexico would conduct some high-profile detention and extraditions of gang leaders.
Payan acknowledges that such arrests are unlikely to have an impact on transnational criminal organizations that have abandoned the traditional concept of a second, micromanaging boss in favor of one that more closely resembles a business that spreads or disbands and replaces Executives as needed.
With the upcoming election, Ballard said,” There is certainly a lot of inside machinations in Mexico right now.” ” It might be political, I ca n’t really say. It’s possible that they were searching for someone else and discovered Abraham Oseguera because he’s the closest they can get to Nemesio.
In 1993, Abraham Oseguera was given a 10-year prison sentence in the Northern District of California for conspiring to distribute cocaine and allowing a criminal to possess a firearm. Additionally, it was discovered that he was illegally entering the country without authorization, faced re-entry charges, and was finally deported to Mexico.
