Pro-Palestinian students set up ‘liberation zone’ encampment in Harvard Yard

After school made the area off limits and prohibited “unauthorized constructions,” tents were erected.

Despite the university’s ongoing restrictions on the place this week, pro-Palestinian individuals set up an anti-Israel camp on Wednesday in Harvard Yard.

At one point, as many as 500 individuals participated in the opposition, demanding “divestment” from Israel and urging the school to reverse its decision to suspend the Bachelor Palestine Solidarity Committee, The Harvard Crimson information. In the past year, there have been numerous identical demonstrations on schools across the nation.

One organizer addressed the crowd,” We call on you to communicate our anger as a starting point for continued and ongoing mobilization.” When Harvard most wants us to be silent, we are obligated to respond up louder than ever in this day. Free, completely Palestine”.

After that, students began putting tents and sleeping bags on the grass, according to The Crimson, despite warning signs for disciplinary action if they “bring in illicit structures such as huts or tables or stop exposure to building entrances.”

Students cheer violently and beat drums as others rush to create tents and sleeping bags on the grass in a video posted on the Bachelor Palestine Solidarity Committee’s Instagram account.

    According to The Crimson:

In a Monday interview, time Harvard President Alan M. Garber ‘ 76 declined to act out using authorities in response to undergraduate protests, but said there would be a “very, very great club” before their presence. Officials at universities have remained steadfast in opposition to Israeli ban requests.

The huts were set up while Harvard University Police Department officers were keeping an eye, but they have not yet interacted.

One protester claimed to the student newspaper that they” smuggled ] the equipment into Harvard Yard and kept it in freshman dormitories overnight.

The Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine, a partnership of kids “fighting for withdrawal and a FreePalestine”, described the camp as a “liberation area for Gaza” in an Instagram article.

” The coalition wo n’t stop until it achieves disclosure and divestment”, the post states.

    The Crimson record continues:

According to a PSC administrator at the camp, the pro- Palestine protesters are split into four distinct levels of chance engagement, with some — the “red group” ready to be arrested.

The administrator said a second group, the “pink team,” is anticipating disciplinary action from the Harvard College Administrative Board. The “green group” is a volunteer organization with little chance of being detained or facing college administrative action, while the “yellow team” is tasked with coordinating almost all of the protesters and providing supplies.

A” Daily Events Schedule” for the” Harvard Liberated Zone” on PSC’s Instagram account lists an” art build for tent decoration” and a “mental health break”.

The school shut Harvard Yard down earlier this week and set up perimeter security measures and evidence, according to The Boston Globe. Security personnel stationed at the open gates just permitted admission to those with Harvard IDs at all but five of the walls, according to the report.

The college told The Globe in a statement that” we shifted to] Harvard University ID] access only to be ahead of potential problems with non-Harvard recognized parties.”

Related demonstrations at various institutions have resulted in even stricter measures.

Columbia University announced earlier this week that protests that were violent and opposed to Israel may make the majority of the semester unlikely to occur.

After a journalist from a Hebrew pupil was reported stabbed in the eye by police wearing mob gear, Yale University students were also detained, according to The College Fix.
