A Sacramento State University honors school that focuses on black students just received a financial increase.
California State University’s method awarded$ 250, 000 to the program.
It will be the “nation’s second Black honors school”, according to a school news.
While the college says in its press release that it will “offer to high-achieving students of all races, cultures, and majors a comprehensive curriculum focusing on the Black and African American experience,” other language suggests that the initiative wo n’t be focused on helping white students.
According to Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs Dilcie Perez,” We are committed to increasing the chances for Black students to attain the life-changing advantages of a CSU level.” This can only begin when we are responsible to one another and our students.
We applaud the institutions for participating in a sincere self-assessment of college choices that identified strengths as well as growth potential, cross-campus engagement, and development in supporting Black students, Perez added.
She referenced a record on” Black Student Success”.
” We are committed to increasing the chances for Black students to receive the life-changing benefits of a CSU amount,” she said.” This can only begin when we are responsible to each other and our students,” she said.
The Black Honors College will have smaller classes, specific general education programs, and faculty who have had a track record of success serving Black students, according to the university.
President Luke Wood even made use of language that indicated that this is not just about educating dark history, but also about investing assets especially into programming for dark students.
After enrolling at Sacramento State, Wood said,” I knew it was time to build something novel that brought Black success and excellence to life.”
In an unregistered video about the initiative, Wood said,” There is no other place in the country that has an honors school that’s specifically designed to serve dark and African-American students.

A previous news release that made the announcement of the program also outlined how it would be focused on black students and offer them unique opportunities.
In February, Honors College Dean of Individuals Boatamo Mosupyoe stated that the Black Honors College was created to provide our Black students with a unique road to a future where they can succeed.
There will be an intentional concentrate on traditional mentorship to adapt students to the demands of university, paid internship opportunities to give students substantial experience, and elite co-curricular education to improve their general college experience.
