
The USS George Washington aircraft provider may leave , Hampton Roads , Thursday as it deploys to , South America , en route to its new homeport of Yokosuka,  , Japan.
The , Washington , is deploying for the first time in almost a decade as part of Southern Seas 2024. The carrier may work alongside makes from , Argentina,  , Brazil,  , Chile,  , Colombia,  , Ecuador,  , Peru , and , Uruguay , over the next several times while it circumnavigates , South America.
From , South America, the , Washington , did mind to , San Diego  , before transiting to , Japan, where it will be the forwards- deployed aircraft after this time. It may reduce the USS Ronald Reagan.
The , Washington , was recently homeported in , Japan , from 2008 to 2015, coming to Naval Station Norfolk in , December 2015.
The bulk of the company’s period in the region was spent useless at Newport News Shipbuilding, where it was a device for more than six decades. The provider entered the port in , August 2017 , for its middle- life refueling and intricate revamp. The process, which usually takes four years, was exacerbated by difficulties related to the crisis.
During its day in the port, there were nine deaths among the , Washington , team, including three in one year in , April 2022. The deaths among the , Washington , staff sparked , a huge effort to change the approach the , Navy , treats sailors , experiencing emotional health problems.
Since its redelivery to the , Navy , in , May 2023, staff members have worked to count for implementation, including getting , operational many times , throughout the previous year.
” Team Warfighter is ready to go”, said Capt.  , Tim Waits, commanding agent of the , Washington. ” Not only for the trip that awaits in , South America, but ready to serve as the world’s onward- deployed naval forces aircraft in Yokosuka”.
