The publisher of The Times focused instead on a higher principle during meetings with Vice President Harris and other administration officials: that consistently avoiding interviews and questions from major news outlets does n’t just undermine a significant norm; it also sets up a dangerous precedent that incoming presidents can use to avoid scrutiny and accountability.

In order to understand their government, Mr. Sulzberger has constantly urged the White House to have the leader meet with The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNN, and other big independent media outlets that millions of Americans rely on to know it.

Reporters with the New York Times also objected to a recent statement from POLITICO that claimed editor A. G. Sulzberger said in a personal opinion that “only an appointment with a document like the Times is check that the 81-year-old Biden is also fit to carry the presidency.”

The president has a reputation for ghosting the White House press corps, frequently giving press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre access to the room while being largely absent. His press dodging became so problematic that even the&nbsp, Washington Post&nbsp, called him out on it in an article last year.

” In his first two- and- a- half years as president, Biden has held fewer news conferences than his predecessors. He has spoken to fewer journalists than major news outlets, despite his pledge to bring back traditional press relations following the Trump era, it noted.

” At the same time, the White House is contacting an array of online influencers, social media personalities, TikTok stars and other nontraditional figures to spread its message, creating an alternative communication network that is different from previous presidencies”, it added.
