A full of 25 people, most of whom are of South Asian descent, have received a full of 346 years in prison for the “abhorrent in the serious” rape, physical abuse, and trafficking of women in the North Kirklees region of West Yorkshire between 1999 and 2012.
Operation Tourway, an inspection starting in 2015 focusing on the settlements of , Batley and Dewsbury, has jailed 25 men in relation to the , “absolutely stunning offending” sexual abuse, rape, and smuggling of eight girls, whom the officers said were treated as “defenceless commodities to be abused and traded at whim”.
Late in 2018, all 24 of the men, most of whom were of South Asian descent, were arrested and charged in December 2020. Reporting restrictions were only lifted on Friday, though a number of the men were found guilty in a series of five trials at the Leeds Crown Court between 2022 and 2024.
Commenting on the convictions,  , Detective Chief Inspector Oliver Coates, of the Kirklees Police, said:  ,” Now that reporting restrictions have been lifted we can, for the first time, disclose full details of all those sentenced so far in what has been a long trial process”.
Juries have been given details of “absolutely shocking offending” committed against victims in these cases over the past two years.
Some of these men were given more than 30 years for the crimes they committed and the abominably vile and degrading way they treated the then-young girls.
Men like Asif Ali committed shocking sexual abuse on a scale that is hard to believe, and saw their young victims as defenseless commodities that were abused and traded at whim.

DCI Coates continued, praising the bravery of the women who came forward to report the abuses they endured as girls, saying:” Their bravery in coming forward and identifying their abusers has allowed us to take action against men whose offending and behavior can only be described as abhorrent in the extreme.
” Far from being powerless, however, those young women have instead fought back as adults and forced them to account for their crimes. They gave evidence in what had been lengthy trials and in support of our investigations with real courage and tenacity.
” I hope they can find some peace and satisfaction in knowing that they have enabled police and partners to launch a massive and challenging investigation that has taken sexual predators off our streets for years to come,” said I hope they will.

According to the West Yorkshire Police, those sentenced are:
Khurum Raziq ( 42 ) from Heckmondwike was found guilty of eight rape-related offenses and sentenced to 22 years.
After being found guilty of three rape counts, Nasar Hussain ( 46 ) from Dewsbury was given an 18-year sentence.
Zafar Qayum ( 44 ) from Dewsbury was given a 30-year sentence for aggravated rape on six counts, including five counts of indecent assault, and three counts of aiding and abetting rape.
For four counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault, Dewsbury resident Ansar Qayum ( 47 ) received a 20-year sentence.
Mohammed Jabbar Qayum, 43, of Dewsbury received a 13-year sentence for two rape counts committed against a victim.
Mohammed Imran Zada, 45, from Batley, was given a 15-year sentence for a rape offense and an offence involving a child.
Michael Birkenshaw, 37, from Wakefield, was given an eight-year sentence for a rape offense.
Amran Mehrban ( 40 ), a Batley resident, was given a 13-year sentence for two rape-related offenses and an assault by penetration offence.
Sarkaut Yasen, 38, from Dewsbury, was given a 15-year sentence for aiding and abetting rape and three trafficking offenses.Mohammed Saleem Nasir, 48, from Dewsbury received a 19-year sentence for two rape-related offenses, including aiding and abetting.
Irfan Khan, 37, of Batley, was given a 12-year and 5-year extended license for three rape-related offenses and an offence of making threats to kill.
Omar Farooq Hussain ( 39 ) from Batley received an 18-year sentence for rape in four different crimes.
Sarfraz Hussain Riaz, 40, from Dewsbury received a 15-year sentence for two rape-related offenses, including an attempted rape, and two rape-related offenses.
For an offence of indecency with children, trafficking, and three rape offenses, Zafar Iqbal ( 38 ) from Batley was given a 17-year sentence.
Nasar Iqbal ( 38 ), from Batley, was given a 10-year sentence for rape and trafficking offences.
Mohammed Chothia ( 47 ) from Batley was given a 17-year sentence for two trafficking-related offenses: one, rape, and trafficking.
Bilal Patel ( 42 ) from Leicester received a 13-year sentence for a trafficking and rape offense.
Asif Ali ( 53 ), a Batley resident, was given a 24 year sentence for 14 counts of rape, two of which involved causing or inciting a child to commit sexual exploitation, and for intentionally encouraging or assisting an offender or assisting, facilitating, or obtaining rape.
Mohammed Tauseef Hanif, 39, of Dewsbury was given a nine-and-a-half year jail term for rape-related offenses.
Ali Shah ( 38 ) from Dewsbury received a 10-year sentence for one rape offense.
For one rape offence, Moshin Nadat ( 38 ) received a seven-and-a-half year sentence from Heckmondwike.
Safraz Miraf ( 49 ) from Dewsbury received a four and a half year prison sentence for an attempted rape offence.
Mohammed Nazam Nasser ( 38 ) from Batley was given a seven-and-a-half year sentence for rape.
Amir Ali Hussain, 45, of Batley, was given an eight-year sentence for rape.
