The first of 11 boats that have been detained for a quarter have left the Baltimore Port on Thursday morning using a different shipping route that opened less than two days prior.

With the aid of two tugboats, Balsa 94, a cargo fleet, sailed only before 10 a.m., passing fragments of the still grounded Dali freighter that crashed into and demolished the course on March 26. The Balsa is headed to Saint John, Canada, where is really occur by beginning next year.

Coast guard authorities said Thursday the stream had a degree of 38 feet, no 35 feet as previously announced. It is the longest of four alternative, temporary routes in and out of the slot. But the new Fort McHenry Limited Access Channel, for economically crucial vessels, will be available just through 6 a. m. Monday, or through Tuesday if conditions adversely affects transit.

According to port officials,” the main goal of this four-day period is to let the ships that have been staying in the Port of Baltimore since the March 26 incident to depart.”

Since the Dali struck a gate support column on March 26, which caused the 1. 6 mile bridge to crumble and inflicted six fatalities to the port’s building staff, the most vehicle traffic has been blocked there.

11 big cargo ships were prevented from leaving the dock as a result of the crisis.

Five of the vessels already stranded, including a huge car ship, are already expected to get out during the four- day window, said Capt. David O’Connell, the Coast Guard’s Captain of the Port for the Key Bridge Response Unified Command. A little mass carrier and an aluminum ship are expected to be on the inbound vessels, he said.

Four of the 11 cargo boats with docked in the harbor have “immediate” programs to exit at this time. They are part of the U. S. Maritime Administration’s Set Reserve Force, a ship established in 1976 to rapidly provide National troops around the world. On Wednesday, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration revealed that he was aware of no forthcoming plans to remove those boats from the slot.

How’s some of what we know:

The non-military vessels moored at a coal wharf in Curtis Bay from Seagirt Marine Terminal and the Canton business shore.

    — Two likely have to wait before they can keep, based on their required review level, including the large aircraft Klara Oldendorf, sailing under the flag of Madeira, and the coal carrier JY River, sailing under the flag of Liberia. Both need a nearly 50- foot channel to sail when loaded.

One of the several large ships that are still moored in the port is the Klara Oldendorf, which is one of several that are stuck in the Francis Scott Key Bridge following the collapse of the Francis Scott Bridge. ( Jerry Jackson/Staff ) — Others that have been stuck in port but may be able to depart include:

Palanca Rio is a general cargo ship sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, a general cargo ship sailing under the Dutch flag, a vehicle carrier sailing under the Swedish flag, and a bulk carrier traveling under the Thai flag.

    — The Carmen, owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen, needs 37 feet of water when fully loaded but likely will be able to depart using the new channel. The Norwegian-based shipping company announced earlier this month that it believes the Carmen’s stuck in Baltimore would have a financial impact on the month-long period of between$ 5 million and$ 10 million.

When the channel reopens, our vessel, M/V Carmen, is still awaiting clearance to sail. Prior to the bridge’s collapse, the port’s planned cargo operations were finished, and the vessel and crew are prepared to sail as soon as the channel is reopened.

    — The other four ships all need less draft than the 35 feet that the newly opening channel offers. The Saimaagracht only needs that when it is fully loaded, but it needs almost every inch of it. The Phatra Naree needs 33.5 feet when loaded, the Palanca Rio needs as many as 29 feet, and the Balsa 94 needs just 22 feet.

    — The newest channel will be available along with three other temporary channels, with depths of 11, 14 and 20 feet. The new channel will be marked with lighted aids and subject to the Coast Guard’s Captain of the Port’s discretion based on the weather.

Because the channel is close to the grounded Dali, vessels must be piloted by a Maryland State pilot and escorted by two tugboats at speeds of or below 5 knots. Ships with displacements greater than 60, 000 long tons will most likely not be permitted through the channel.

The 35-foot channel will not reopen until around May 10 for salvage crews to begin lifting steel off the Dali and removing debris from the harbor’s main 50-foot shipping channel after shutting down next week. The Army Corps of Engineers expects to reopen the Port of Baltimore’s permanent 700- foot wide, 50- foot deep channel by the end of May.

    — The first three temporary channels have been used by smaller ships and barges. Domino Sugar, which has a refinery on the Inner Harbor in Baltimore’s Locust Point, posted on Facebook that the sugar barge Jonathan, which regularly delivers shipments of raw sugar to the refinery, returned Wednesday using the 20- foot navigation channel.

The manufacturer wrote in its post,” Thank you to the Coast Guard and the entire Unified Command who made this possible.”
