According to D.C. supervisory public affairs specialist Thomas Lynch, the Metropolitan Police Department ( MPD ) will require 12 of its senior police officers to resign from their positions on April 30 as a result of a contentious law that the Democratic-controlled district passed in 2022 following the 2020 race riots.
MPD has lost more than 1, 400 soldiers since the city passed the legislation in 2022, the D. C. Police Union said. Washington, DC’s, government initially enacted the laws in 2020 as emergency policy following George Floyd’s death.
MPD did not renew , the 12 senior officials ‘ deals due to the law, which “prohibits the division from appointing police officials who have any serious wrongdoing in their history” , , WTOP News , reported. Senior officials are MPD graduates who later resigned and returned to their positions to serve their society.
The rules, which the D. C. Police Union opposes, is called the , Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022.
It defines” major misbehavior” as follows:
- Unlawful discrimination ( e. g., on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion,
national origin, sexual orientation, or disability ) ( excluding employment
discrimination); - Immoral stop, search, and/or arrest,
- Retaliation or retribution against a sworn witness or another person ( including sworn members )
against a person for bringing a complaint against a part. - Instances where a member of the public is accused of “assault on a policeman officer”
official”, “resisting arrest”, or “disorderly do” and the pursuing attorney
or the court informs MPD that the charge( s ) will be dropped based on the fact that the case( s ) is being litigated.
person’s credibility, - Situations where MPD was notified by the prosecutor in writing
a judge or attorney for a constitutional violation involving possible misconduct that was discovered while a legal case or administrative proceeding was taking place. - Civil claims alleging sworn part misconduct while acting in a public power.
The law is “inarguably the worst piece of public safety legislation the D. C. Council has ever passed” , , the D. C. Police Union wrote a news release:
The bill forbids the choosing of sworn personnel if any law enforcement agency has ever issued them with severe punishment. This includes the Metropolitan Police Department, which means that the MPD cannot hire these soldiers because of previous operational employees disputes, some of which are over 20 years older.
Violence in the Democrat- managed city , soared , in 2023, according to authorities office information:
- Murders: Up 35 percentage
- Robberies: Up 67 percentage
- Aggressive Crime: Up 39 cent
- Motor Vehicle Theft: Up 82 percentage
Residents of the city attribute the rise in crime to Biden-appointed U.S. attorney Matthew Graves.  , Graves , prosecute-67-of-those-arrested-in-nations-capital/”>refused , to indict 67 percent of those arrested who would have been , put on trial in the D. C. Superior Court, according to 2022 city records. In 2023, he declined to , prosecute , 56 percentage of those arrested.
Graves ‘ track record in prosecuting situations before the D. C. Court of Appeals is not much healthier, he , admitted , in October, although he blamed the court, which has a lot of Democrat- nominated judges, for the lack of beliefs. The D.C. Court of Appeals is made up of five justices appointed by Republican presidents and nine justices appointed by Democratic presidents. Joe Biden appointed three.
Former President Donald Trump vowed to restore law and order if he were to win reelection, whether Democrats ‘ appointed Graves or judges were in charge of the District’s soft-on-crime position. Sharing a Breitbart News exclusive in October titled” D. C. Residents Fear Crime Surge Turning Area into , U. S. War Zone”, the former president  , called , the town run by Democrats a “dirty, crime ridden death trap”, pledging that reforms will be a part of his reelection platform.
