On Monday’s broadcast of Newsmax TV’s” The Record”, Rep. Dean Phillips ( D- MN) stated that while schools like Columbia have n’t acted quickly enough to deal with the encampments and demonstrations on campus,” a lot of voices now are being left out, they’re being diminished, they’re being canceled”.
After number Greta Van Susteren said that there is a lack of conversation on university campuses, Phillips said,” And that is a very risky sign for the United States, because we only did survive if we encourage debate, if we disagree without being repulsive, and so far, we’ve done very well. But there’s no problem, Greta, appearance, I’m a liberal, I’m a moderate Democrat, but I believe deeply that we should have school campuses that encourage conversation and differences and consideration. I was the Problem Solvers Caucus ‘ former vice chair in Congress. I love my Democratic colleagues, because I learned from them liberal principles, they learned from we Democrats. That’s the same lifestyle that should be the standard on school schools, but I know, just like you, a lot of voices today are being left out, they’re being diminished, they’re being canceled. And I think we may are- invent and reinvest in intelligent debate so that younger people in America understand the responsibility to be important philosophers, to disagree without being disagreeable, and, most importantly, the compassionate understand]ing ] that your stance is it, but you have to walk in someone else’s shoes. I do n’t think our schools are doing a good job, and, clearly, based on the events of the past year, there’s a lot of work to do”.
He added,” I was pleased, I should say, that Columbia finally issued that letter, is finally taking steps. I believe they ought to have done it right away and established a standard for the rest of the nation. I believe there will be some consequences lessons that, as we move forward, might be very useful.
