Tesla, owned by Elon Musk, is facing a number of claims and a federal investigation, which raises questions about the company’s claim that individuals are the only ones to blame for accidents involving its Autopilot systems.
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is said to have staked the company’s future on automatic moving, but a number of lawsuits and studies are challenging the health and promotion of the company’s Autopilot driver support technology. Critical or fatal accidents that occurred while motorists were reportedly relying on Autopilot are the subject of at least eight lawsuits that are scheduled to go to trial in the upcoming year. According to these concerns, Tesla exaggerated the features ‘ capabilities, which essentially left the driver to decide how to steer, accelerate, and other decisions, giving the impression of confidence that led to tragedy.

Data emerging in these cases, including dash- rod images obtained by the Post, reveals surprising information. In claims, two previously unidentified fatal accidents from 2022 are detailed. In Phoenix, Iwanda Mitchell, 49, was driving a Tesla when she struck a stalled Toyota Camry on the highway. When Mitchell got out of her vehicle, the other features of the vehicle, including autopilot, reportedly failed to evade evasive action.
Jose Roman Jaramillo Cortez reportedly used Autopilot and was intoxicated while driving his Tesla Model 3 on the wrong side of the road for a few days before colliding with Christian Malone, 20, who died in the collision in Sumner County, Tennessee.
Tesla asserts that it is not held responsible for these accidents and that its owners are ultimately in charge of the car. The firm points to consumer manuals and on-screen warnings that “extremely clear” that drivers must be in complete control when using Autopilot. According to the company, the driver is distracted or impaired in some upcoming court cases.
Federal officials and the courts are currently putting strain on this state, though. A new review of Autopilot was recently released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ), expressing concern that a December recall did not significantly improve the use of the technology and that drivers were misled into believing that the “automation has greater capabilities than it does.” NHTSA revealed that a two- yr research into Autopilot had identified 467 accidents linked to the systems, 13 of them dangerous.
Tesla’s decision to live a higher- profile case involving the deadly crash of Apple engineer Walter Huang, along with a Florida judge’s ruling that Tesla had “knowledge” of flaws in its technology, are giving new momentum to cases when seen as much shots. In a situation involving a fatal accident in Delray Beach, Florida in 2019, the prosecutor upheld a defendant’s demand for punishing damages, citing that there is a “genuine” debate over whether Tesla” created a near zone of risk that posed a common threat of harm to others.”
Tesla, which has already seen its stock price decline as a result of declining sales and increased competition, may have a significant impact on the results of these lawsuits. Critics argue that the company’s marketing of Autopilot, including the very name itself, invites drivers to place too much trust in the automation.
Tesla has faced a jury only once over the role Autopilot may have played in a fatal crash, prevailing in a case in Riverside, California, last year. Despite Musk’s earlier promise never to settle” an unjust case,” the company has shown a new willingness to settle in some other cases.
