A traditional shift to American drug policy that could have broad-resultaneous wave effects across the country will be made by the US drug enforcement administration to categorize marijuana as a less risky drug, AP has learned. The White House company of management and budget needs to review the DEA‘s plan, which acknowledges the clinical applications of cannabis and acknowledges that it has less chance of being abused than some of the country’s most dangerous drugs. However, it would n’t make marijuana entirely legal for recreational use.
Five people with knowledge of the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the company’s decision to the AP on Tuesday, clearing the last major regulation obstacle before the company’s biggest plan change in over 50 years you take effect.
The DEA may receive people feedback on the plan to remove cannabis from its current categorization as a Schedule I drug, along with cocaine and LSD when OMB approves. Following a proposal from the national health and human services department, it moves marijuana to Schedule III along with some injectable steroids. The last rule would be released after the open comment period.
It comes after Prez Biden requested a review of the national cannabis law in October 2022 and has requested pardon thousands of Americans who have been found guilty of easy ownership of the drug. He has also urged local leaders and governors to implement similar measures to get rid of weed views. ” Our failed policy toward marijuana has caused too many lives to be upended. It’s moment that we best these wrongdoings”, Biden said in Dec. The election season news had support Biden, a Democrat, increase flagging support, particularly among younger citizens.
Schedule III medications are also classified as controlled substances and subject to rules and restrictions, and those who use them without authorization face federal criminal charges. Some critics argue the DEA should n’t change course on marijuana, saying rescheduling is n’t necessary and could lead to harmful side effects.
