Columbia University Professor Joseph Slaughter said Wednesday on MSNBC’s” Chris Jansing Reports” that the university’s government’s “gross mishandling” caused the , New York Police Department to have to clean the campsite and arrest the protest.
Slaughter continued,” University close to me, students close to me were crying in desperation over the fact that the presidency has escalated to the point where they are bringing in an assault group to stop student opposition.” I get the impression that the developing occupation is different from a totally quiet, peaceful encampment that has been around campus for the past ten days or so. :”
He continued,” The fact that the building may be occupied is largely, is due partially to the total incompetence of this leadership. For the past seven decades, it has continued to escalate. For the past seven months, these students have been attempting to spread what they believe to be the greatest human rights issue of the time, and at every change, they have been met with authoritarian actions to shut down their ability to speak, to display, to render their voices heard. And this presidency has consistently escalated and kettled the talk of the students by failing to listen to its students beginning in October and November and failing to hear the voices of its university, experts in the field, authorities in the area, coming up with their kind of administrative choices among a little cabinet of ministers at the top of the, beneath the leader.
According to NBC News ‘ Antonia Hylton,” They released a statement this morning, the president saying that they made an effort to have fruitful conversations with the students that went on for eight days,” essentially saying that they made an effort to prevent what transpired. Do you do not believe them”?
Slaughter remarked,” They may have tried their best over the past eight days. They did not perform at their best over the previous six months. We would n’t be here today if they had had those fruitful discussions with the students when they were clearly making their statements in a completely peaceful, vigil-like manner in November and October. if they had taken the time to chat up with the students. According to what I understand, this president refused to meet with the leaders of the two student organizations that she unilaterally suspended in November, refused to meet with them to discuss their demands or concerns, and refused to hear the overwhelming majority of students who view this as an unfolding, potentially genocide in Gaza.
