Before, Newsom and University of California chairman Michael Drake had been silent. On Tuesday, UCLA Chancellor Gene Block issued a warning about the camp and just condemned it.
The protesters invaded the main square of UCLA on Thursday, setting up wooden walls. On Friday, campaigners physically assaulted this columnist and blocked journalists from entering the street to video the demonstration.
The protesters began reportedly delegating surveillance authority to UCLA, granting entry only to those with bracelets and denying access to” Nazi” Jews and other people as they began patrolling the perimeter of their encampment.
Everyone who tried to walk to school across the open space was prevented, by pressure, from entering, and there were several tussles. There were also fights with pro-Israel counter-protesters at a protest on Sunday, when UCLA safety was lacking. The activists forced pro- Israel counter-top- protesters, including little children, to stroll through a labyrinth of intense pro- Israeli activists. UCLA claimed it lacked officers, but had troops around the camp.
Suddenly, on Wednesday night, after a day in which pro- Israel vigilantes and pro- Arab activists clashed on school, with police just arriving hours into the melée, Newsom condemned violence, vandalism, and “lawlessness”.
The show recalled the Black Lives Matter riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August 2020, which therefore- candidate Joe Biden declined to denounce until three days in, when Kyle Rittenhouse shot three people, killing two, in personal- defense.
