A convicted sex offender is requesting that the Norwegian Supreme Court grant a human right to access social media in Stavanger, Norway ( AP ).

A person used the Snapchat messaging apps to communicate with adolescent boys and molested a minor is the subject of the case before the court on Thursday.

The unnamed criminal received a 13-month prison sentence last year and was prohibited from using Snapchat for two centuries.

According to his attorneys, the European Convention on Human Rights prohibits him from from having access to his accounts.

The scenario illustrates how crucial social media have become for freedom of expression, despite the jury having to decide the situation through laws that are outdated.

The situation raises significant questions about the limits that the state may impose on access to social media platforms, which are crucial tools for ensuring cultural networks and promoting free speech, according to protection lawyer John Christian Elden.

The state effectively argued that the ban was “proportionately measured against the fact that the accused has used Snap to sexually abuse children.” A successful November 2023 charm was unsuccessful. He was given the option to use other cultural advertising, according to the Appeal Court. The criminal may file an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights if the Supreme Court upholds the judgment as well.

The limits of Norway justice have previously been tested by the German protocol. The far-right radical Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in 2011 and lost a court case in February, argued that the convention’s confinement while he was serving his prison sentence constituted cruel punishment.

Participants to the ECHR agree to abide by 18 reports that protect individuals ‘ right, including life, rights, and freedom of expression. Norway was the second nation in 1952 to adopt the convention, following the United Kingdom.

Snap, run by Snap Inc., allows users to send and receive information that disappear once they are read. Additionally, users have the ability to actually locate various users who choose to use location tracking.

Jump permits accounts to be created secretly despite prohibiting child sexual abuse on the app. In an email, it stated that” we also take steps to prevent the associated system and other accounts connected to the customer from creating another Snap account” when we activate accounts for sexual abuse and grooming conduct.

In the second quarter of 2023, Snap impaired 343, 865 accounts involving kid sexual exploitation. Although it is unknown how many of these accounts were entirely impaired, it approved 879 balances in Norway.

In the upcoming months, the Scandinavian judge will make its decision.
