At a school “encampment,” the University of California Riverside rebuffed Friday’s demands of pro-Palestinian activists, breaking with the rest of the University of California (UC) method to acquire reversing its position on Israel.

The protesters also demanded that UC Riverside boycott Jewish universities as part of a nationwide campaign by anti-Israel activists and organizations that may have received money from abroad.

    Nearby KTLA 5 reported:

Protest occupied the area next to Bell Tower on April 29th, prompting the camp. The movement was led by the school’s section of Students for Justice in Palestine.

    …

The UCR Administration consents to establish a task force made up of individuals appointed by the ASUCR’s Diversity Council and university appointed by the Academic Senate to look into whether the university’s investment should be invested in a manner that will take into account the businesses involved in hands manufacturing and delivery and whether the school should pay for it in a manner that will be both financially and morally sound.
    …

The School of Business has discontinued International Programs in Oxford, USA, Cuba, Vietnam, Brazil, China, Egypt, Jordan, and Israel.

Students for Justice in Palestine ( SJP) at UC Riverside claimed triumphantly on Instagram that the university had suspended” all study abroad programs with Israel” and that the organization had handled the terms of the agreement in a slightly different way.

SJP claimed that UC Riverside had made a commitment to boycotting Sabra chickpeas. ” Sabra” is a Hebrew term referring to a local- born Israeli. Some protesters claim that Arabs” stolen” Middle Eastern food like chickpeas. ( Sabra is based in the U. S. )

In return, the individuals in the camp agreed to take down their huts, having “won” through force.

But it is not obvious how UC Riverside’s deal will conform with existing California law that prevents extra- Israel strikes, known as “anti- BDS” ( Boycott, Divestment, Punishment ) policy. In 2016, next- Gov. Jerry Brown ( D) signed AB 2844, which stipulates the following:

The Legislature intends to prevent the Legislature from using taxpayer funds to conduct business with or otherwise assist any state or private organization that uses First Amendment rights to carry out unfair acts against people. This includes, but is not limited to, unfair behavior committed against Jews under the excuse of a State of Israel protest or opposition, which is protected by the Constitution.

    …

A person who submits a bid or proposal to a state agency in connection with a contract worth one hundred thousand dollars ($ 100,000 ) or more shall certify, under the law of perjury, that any discrimination against any sovereign nation or peoples recognized by the United States, including, but not limited to, the nation and people of Israel, is not used in violation of Section 51 of the Civil Code or the California Fair Employment and Housing Act ( Chapter 7 ( commencing with Section 12960 ) of Part 3

UC Riverside joins Brown University as the first establishments to ratify requirements for an Israeli withdrawal. Regardless of the UC system’s personal policy against delinquying from Israel, it is unclear whether UC Riverside can meet that requirement.
