New regulations mandate that “privacy and dignity” be protected, which means that many public and commercial buildings must have individual loos for men and women, according to the American government.
Later this year, the government, the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, and the Minister for Women and Equalities, Kemi Badenoch, the subject of long-discussed changes to building rules that would allow the two women to have access to independent restrooms in newbuilds and significant repair tasks, will become effective.
Any fresh or restored bar, restaurant, office, school, or hospital — most non- private buildings, in other words— may provide men’s ‘ and women’s ‘ loos rather than what have been called gender- natural lavatories in order to receive planning permission. The authorities say this will help guard” safety, protection and dignity”.

A rule of thumb will apply to premises where two sets of restrooms cannot be provided, for instance when it is too small to provide both, but in those cases self-contained amenities would require the provision of a loo, sink, and hand-dryer inside a solitary, locked room, all while maintaining total privacy while in use. The government describes these as “dedicated, self-contained ,’unisex’ toilets ‘ that preserve privacy for the single user.”
According to Badenoch, the regulations would “better provision for women so that our particular biological, health, and sanitary needs are met” ( p. 2 ). The regulations, she said, did: “guide organisations to style unisex and single- sex toilets, ending the rise of consequently- called gender- natural combined sex toilet spaces, which deny privacy and dignity to both men and women”.
Just last week, she revealed schoolgirls in the United Kingdom who had been denied single- sex loos had developed , urinary tract infections, such was their aversion to gender- neutral toilets.
Plans to alter these have been in the air for a while. A 2020 government- ordered review of” toilet provision” found “increasing numbers of publicly accessible toilets are being converted into’ gender neutral’ facilities, causing problems for women and older people in particular”.  , In 2021 the government made moves to improve the overall provision of public loos by introducing tax relief on the facilities, and in , 2022, Badenoch addressed Parliament to make a statement on the issue.
Women are also more likely to feel less comfortable using mixed sex facilities, according to her statement,” Women also need safe spaces because their particular biological, health, and sanitary needs are being “eliminated” in public life.” The government intended to change building regulations” to ensure separate toilets for men and women continues to be provided,” according to Badenoch in July 2022.
State broadcaster the BBC dutifully reported opposition to the plan by long-controversial child transgender charity Mermaids, who claimed that “gender-specific facilities where trans people can feel safe can feel safe in using are vital, and gender-neutral facilities are also extremely necessary to ensure non-binary people’s experiences with toilet facilities are one of comfort.”
