BRUSSELS: The European Union Commission is to close six years of rule of law trials against Poland, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday, marking the beginning of a “new book” for the country.
When the country’s far-right group PiS ruled, the trials began. Donald Tusk, a pro- Union liberal, became excellent minister next time, putting Poland on a more pro- EU program.
Poland has taken a number of parliamentary and non-legislative measures, according to a statement from the EU, to address concerns about the justice system’s independence.
In a post on X, von der Leyen wrote,” Today, we open a new section for Poland.”
According to the EU, Poland had pledged to put into practice the decisions of the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights.
The EU claimed that Poland’s Law and Justice ( PiS ) party’s extensive reform of the judiciary had harmed democratic checks and balances and put courts under political influence.
Tusk has vowed to rebuild criminal democracy.
