This summers, there will be no Barbenheimer to keep Hollywood.
The summers of 2024 appears to be a long, hard slog at the box office due to a lack of microphonic blockbusters and a poor start to Ryan Gosling’s disappointing debut in Universal’s The Fall Guy. After three years of steady increases since the pandemic — thanks to names like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Top Gun: Maverick — Hollywood may experience a summer downsizing.
The Fall Guy, a comedy about Hollywood stunt performers, debuted last weekend to$ 28.5 million, falling short of the expected  , opening of$ 30 million to$ 40 million.
Does it serve as a harbinger of the future?
Hollywood’s summer line- up  , is once again leading- heavy with sequels — Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,  , Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,  , Bad Boys: Drive or Die, as well as the active Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4.  , The just superhero film on the summertime calendar is Disney’s Deadpool &, Wolverine — a cross between the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman businesses.
The aforementioned sequels are n’t expected to bring in more money than their predecessors, despite the fact that surprises do occur ( Top Gun: Maverick almost outperformed all expectations in 2022 ). None of them are generating the same pre-release sensation that boosted Barbie and Oppenheimer to the top.
The lack of superhero movies — a good thing depending on whom you ask — is due in large part to model weakness and plummeting quality, with new names including Disney ‘s , The Marvels, starring Brie Larson, and Sony’s Madame Web bombing hard at the box office.
So far, 2024 has been a dud for Hollywood.
According to a Slashfilm report, the domestic box office has decreased by more than 20 % from the same time last year in 2023.
