Illegal immigration costs the American taxpayer at least £14 billion per year in public service, only, posing an “existential” harm to the land, draining badly needed and limited resources, a former state secretary has said.
Dame Andrea Jenkyns, the Deputy Chairwoman of the European Research Group ( ERG ) and former Minister of State for Skills under short- termed PM Liz Truss, told fellow MPs this week that, according to official statistics, each illegal migrant costs the taxpayer on average , £12, 000 per year in public services. With an estimated 1.2 million fugitives living in the country, the charge in service alone is upward of £14.4 billion, Dame Andrea calculated.

Jenkyns also noted that the Home Office, the government agency in charge of handling immigration, is projected to spend practically £8 million per day on immigration police this year in addition to the estimated £482 million that the agency will spend on immigration enforcement.

Additionally, the figures presented by Jenkyns did not account for the costs incurred by mass legal immigration, which has exceeded the Conservative Party’s pledge to reduce net migration following Brexit, and which has repeatedly outweighed illegal migration.
The only “real remedy to take back full control of our borders,” according to Dame Andrea, one of the 11 Tory MPs who voted against the Rwanda bill because it failed to go far enough, would be for the government to finally withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights and, as it did in 2022, to revoke its association’s right to intervene on migrant res, thereby stifling the deterrence scheme.
